Last wk the students presented on Eliot’s Waste Land, Jones’ Anathemata, Auden, Pound, & Woolf’s Journal of Mistress Joan Martyn for the MODERNIST MEDIEVALISMS week of #TheMedievalNow. My co-tutor Dr Tom Revell gave a lecture on Tolkien & Lewis, & @cappsjuliano.bsky.social led a collage poetry task.

It’s fun to read them together and see where we diverge. For example, Josh’s love of medievalisms and what you might call Christian mythology comes through, while mine is shooting for that “sacredness without religion” thing from A Wizard of Earthsea and a no-appendices read of Lord of the Rings.

I had a really great time in Stavanger last week. The students, staff and MARRI project are doing a lot of really cool work on modern medievalisms and you should all check it out here: www.uis.no/en/research/...

Page proofs have arrived! East Asian Medievalisms: Poetry, Media, Manga (Cambridge UP), coming soon.

So excited to contribute to the Cambridge Elements series in the #GlobalMiddleAges and to create more dialogue across #AsianAmericanStudies and #AsianStudies.

My utter disappointment learning about some cool Greek or Roman poetry and being like "oooh I wonder if I can reference this in my Medievalisms" and then I look it up and it's like "this is not a text they would have been familiar with in France"
Kind of wild how the Aeneid was like THEEEE most important literary work of medieval Europe (save like, the Bible and whatever). But nowadays i feel it doesn't really have a presence in like modern cultural references...it's the root, but we know its descendants and predecessors more ....

I'm in that rare category where I have a REAL Star Trek paper. Two, actually.
"I'm not from Nottingham: Medievalisms in Star Trek" is the first; I presented it at the 2023 International Medieval Congress at Western Michigan University.

I take on the ghost of Samuel Huntington and some right-wing tropes in scholarship

It looks like the upcoming episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds combines many of my interests: Star Trek, fantasy, and medievalisms. I shall watch it many times, and I’m already composing a paper proposal in my head.

Oh and it’s a La’an episode. I know it’s a genre episode but I don’t care.

We had a chat on this topic here with @alexharvv.bsky.social @rhigarthjones.bsky.social and came to ask if anyone has worked on medievalisms in sport clubs names.

Good oppurtunity to try a revival of the discussion, maybe?

I’m always disappointed whenever things like ‘vikings’ ‘celts’ or ‘raiders’ trend on BlueSky, because it always ends up being sportsball

Stop making medievalism relevant!

(Also, thanks Russia, now I have a hook for the essay on Russian wartime medievalisms I am writing 🙃).
This reads like something straight out of a medieval chronicle.

This lecture on #Shakespeare and #HouseoftheDragon is from April 2024, before Seasons 2 and 3 aired, but I suppose that just means I need to do a sequel. #medievalism #medievalsky

Another product to add to the apothecary of olfactory medievalisms / early modernisms: the new Lush 'Plague Doctor' bath bomb (marketed as 'ideal for a touch of medieval flair')

Haha.
Seriously, I'm wondering if anyone has worked on medievalisms in sport clubs names.
August 9, 2026 at 11:45 AM
Oh I see, sorry! I *am* a sports gal and I love looking at the sports-social intersection so I got distracted...

To your actual point: yes! Those archives / individual histories would be a v good way to do a survey of when teams adopted medievalisms names, where, context, etc, if one doesn't exist

Not sure about the US but there are a few good sports / social historians in the UK - I don't know how many moved here from twitter but definitely @collinstony.bsky.social and @drcricket.bsky.social. No medievalisms from them, though!
