Philips’ is a very good case study where ethnoreligious or any particularism leads as opposed to universalism. Eventually you’ll have to throw the very people you claim to speak for under the bus because particularism is inevitably radicalising in the worst possible way.

Notably, the people upset about the initial graphic seemed to think it was a reference to Gaza - even though it said nothing about Gaza, and debates about the universalism or particularism of "Never again" have been part of Holocaust memory for decades before the current historical moment.

I don't really appreciate Piper being dismissive of higher quality studies from Nordic countries because of (???? I guess some kind of cultural particularism?). That's the kind of anti-comparative, methodologically provincial attitude that demands everyone reinvent the wheel before serious reform.

Yeah the argument that the international left rejected ethnic nationalism or religious particularism is basically inaccurate, it extends to rhetoric and nothing more. If anything a lot of them enshrine these states & movements as sources of unique exotic authenticity.

In fact, defining religion and ethnicity as discrete categories is a major way in which Christianity imposes its own supposed universalism upon the rest of the world, hiding its particularism by claiming to completely lack particularistic qualities.
It can be really tricky to parse esp since in the ancient world nationality, ethnicity and religion did not function as the discrete categories they function as today.
