made a quick october blog post. i'm still offline mostly but also thinking about abandonware and the end of the internet ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯ https://ellesho.me/page/website/now/#when-the-partys-ending
when the party's ending
i got an email the other day from partykit about their hosted service shutting down since they joined cloudflare. this has been a very common type of email that i've been receiving lately as it seems like things are constantly being pivoted and abandoned at higher and higher speeds these days. my email is full of sunsetting notices from various things i've signed up for and tried out over the last few years that are now gone. nothing seems to last more than a couple years now. wibby also talks about the frustration in his recent post about deno. at least, for partykit, it's not an abandonment but just a bit of restructuring. if you've been following my page for a while, you'll know that the cursor chat on my homepage runs on partykit, now called partyserver. while they do provide instructions for migrating from the partykit hosted service to a cloudflare worker, i kind of considered just letting the cursor chat disappear from my page. it's always been a fancy extra thing that's a little out of place here. while i write everything else in basic and static html, css, and js, the cursor chat is typescript and dynamic. that bugs me for some reason even though it's a fun thing to have. my cursor chat is a fork of genmon's code that i modified and then added my own stuff to with my poor typescript skills (⌒_⌒;) i'm not very good at typescript so it's always annoying when i need to go in to edit anything. maybe i just don't like the feeling of having gaps in understanding of how everything works on my page because it makes it harder for me to fix things that break ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯ i know lots of people just use ai these days but i don't think that really solves the fundmental issue of not being able to manage your own stuff easily. even if you're okay overlooking all the negatives and harms of ai, it just creates another dependency for you that can fail or go offline at any time, leaving you stranded and clueless. see: "cognitive offloading" and "gradual disempowerment." another reason for thinking about letting the chat go is that i'm not online very much anymore and rarely check into it so i'm not sure if it's worth keeping around. i was using it to say hi to random visitors to my page. i think it's still a nice thing for strangers to bump into each other. i don't know. the deadline for migration is tomorrow and i just went ahead and did the migration. maybe it will stop working eventually when cloudflare suddenly decides it's no longer worthwhile to support (¬_¬;) but i'll keep it around for now. with the way things are going with the internet this week, maybe the web and everything on it will not be around much longer anyways. some even more devastating vulnerability could be uncovered any day now by all these llms crawling all over the place. i don't doubt that there are many critical and exploitable bugs in the way the internet is cobbled together that have just gone unnoticed and somewhat shielded by the fact that human capability is slow. at least with y2k, there was forewarning and people could prepare and fix the 2 digit problem before a deadline. now we've been put in a situation where we're just blindly waiting for a "spicy autocorrect" to chew through everything and highlight the breaking typos faster than anyone can fix them which may destroy all the interconnected services we've become dependent on in everyday life ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯

Partykit makes things SO easy. Realtime interaction wasn't even a consideration untill I had finished writing the standalone logic and then I just...plug in the magic of having other people show up?? Madness.

So, @tinybasejs is cool. Version 5.0 lets you easily merge two stores without conflicts.

@partykit_io is cool. It makes it easy to create stateful, realtime connections.

I smooshed them together, turning a Partykit room into a Tinybase client.

Hi Friends! I've been playing around with local-first apps recently and got @replicache working with @partykit_io. I followed the "Build-your-own-Backend" tutorial, using PartyKit for storage, endpoint hosting, and realtime sockets. Check it out!

Migrated Table Slayer to use Partykit (hosted through Cloudflare) instead of Socketio for it's websocket layer. The harder work setting up Yjs for conflict resolution was done earlier in the week. The Partykit layer is a bit easier to run and scale. TY to @jovianmoon.io for initially suggesting it.

A single-serving waterhole in the Namib Desert using Remix
I work with a window open to a YouTube live stream of a waterhole in Namibia, animals and all. Now it’s multiplayer and hosted on PartyKit using the Remix starter kit.

Unsure what will enable it. The js is served from (and the websocket runs at) the partykit domain

i started it with val.town Townie and later ejected
to #Y.js and #PartyKit bcs the AI started misbehaving and I wanted a multiplayer — couldn't get Townie to set up SSE

used @sakofchit's sakofchit.github.io/system.css/ to avoid fixating on UI and so the users don't treat this too seriously
