The Roman mile was written in the original as "milia passum," meaning 1,000 passum. What was a passum? In ancient Rome, a passum referred to two steps — one right, one left — which together made up roughly 1.5 meters. 1000x1.5m = 1.5km. Little shorter than a mile.

they knew exactly how far a mile was; a thousand steps (mille passum), but how long it took to take those steps would also vary through the year

of course "garum" is "garos" and predates the roman sauce, and 'passum' is sweet Cretan raisin wine.

In this Roman taberna, it was a tradition: a little puls, big glass of passum, then over to Calvary to watch the the crucifixions. But now the woke mob wants to take all of that away.
