Carney insists it will outline "necessary conditions" for federal support, not just a green light.

From the #oilsands industry, he would get an agreement from them to build the long marketed, but never built #PathwaysAlliance carbon capture and storage project. A project industry has been marketing to the public, investors and government for years but never invested in. 22/

Wow, this is nuts. The Canadian federal government under Carney's leadership has apparently been duped by the "Pathways Project"- a plan to make "decarbonized bitumen". What is decarbonized bitumen, you may ask? Aside from imaginary? According to Alberta's clownshow of a premier Danielle Smith, it's as follows: - bitumen production emissions reduction (i.e. scope 1 emissions only) via - "carbon capture, utilization and storage" (of what? Post combustion from steam generation to run steam assisted gravity drainage? How? At what cost? And how do you "utilize" fossil CO2 emissions for anything and call it decarbonization, at least with a straight face?!) - using hydroelectric or small modular nuclear ultimately (i.e. pure distilled #hopium, because Alberta and Saskatchewan both have fossil-fueled electricity grids that would gobble up any hydroelectric power you sent them, and SMNRs are pure nonsense) - and then "direct air capture for the last mile"- to add stupid sauce on top of stupidity- with DAC serving its usual predatory delay function here Here's the clip, where Alberta's clown premier starts talking: https://lnkd.in/gkNDC939 This isn't "decarbonized bitumen", at all. Not only is this pure fantasy- a #hopium induced fever dream, relying on imaginary future technologies with no path to economic reality- but the bitumen STILL ends up being fed to refineries which use it almost exclusively to produce fuels like diesel and jet fuel. This is a massive greenwash. It's using Trump's annexation and tariff threats to soften us up to accept more PUBLIC investment in new fossil fuel infrastructure which simply CANNOT live out its lifetime without leading to a massive overshoot of Canada's GHG emission reduction commitments. Remember when Canada bought a $10 billion pipeline expansion project? That ended up costing $34 billion and is still not being used to its full capacity? Yeah, expect more of that, in the name of "nation building". For this to be happening while smoke from wildfires in western Canada is already destroying air quality across much of the North American continent is, frankly, just disgusting.

What Lies Beneath: Pathways Alliance, Greenwashing, Networks, and Narratives
On May 23, 2024, we held a webinar focused on fossil fuel greenwashing and its impact on Canada’s climate conversation. We discussed the net-zero and climate-action claims made by Pathways Alliance—which comprises six oil sand producers that collectively represent 95% of oil sands production—and we shared findings from the newly published paper, “Greenwashing, Net Zero, and the Oil Sands in Canada: The Case of Pathways Alliance,” authored by our panelists, Re.Climate Research Associates Dr. Melissa Aronczyk and Dr. Patrick McCurdy, and Re.Climate Academic Director Dr. Chris Russill.
