Years ago in DC (Bush 43 era), I stood in a small crowd in front of the Supreme Court building. As I read the engraved pediment that reads “EQUAL JUSTICE UNDER LAW,“ the lady standing next to me said softly, loud enough for me to hear: It was a wonderful idea. A shame it’s been lost. True.

Great visit to Barking’s Eastbury Manor House last weekend for Open House. The house, built 1570s, contains early examples of Arabic numbers used by the builders on site to construct the rafters. Thanks to my fellow guests who pointed this out.
The side of Eastbury Manor House facing the sun, mellow red bricks and windows (three storeys and six bays) with two gables. Very nice. The main door of the house. It’s relatively small and discrete, but there’s a small pediment picked out by tasteful brickwork. The rafters of the Manor House. These would have been originally covered in plaster. The floors may have been used for indoor sports like bowling. The number 12 carved on two planks used to build the rafters. It resembles Arabic numerals.

Salesman's sample for convertible bed in form of a parlor cabinet; walnut, other woods, silvered glass. Upright rectangular case with fake slant-topped cabinet below; scrolling pediment at top of case with lost finial in center; stepped cornice around top edge; paneled sides. Front of cabinet has two arched mirrored windows in top section with molded strip in between; there appears to be a lost piece at the top of this strip which probably served as a handle for opening the bed; scrolling brackets in each top corner of front section. Hinged slanted top opens to empty space down front of unit (perhaps for storing bed linens). Bottom section of case with arched panels. Entire front of cabinet pulls down into a bed: the brackets fold down to form legs at the foot of the bed and support a rectangular box bed frame; removable box spring formed by joined slats of bent wood and springs; headboard across open back of cabinet with scrolled top edge. Condition: Good; some lost pieces including finial at top of cabinet, handle device, and slats in box spring; large crack in proper left lower front panel; scuffs in wood and losses in silver of mirrored glass.

does surprise me there's nothing above the George Rooms though. Because under 'Capability' Brown c.1765 they raised the third storey for an even roofline. that's a lot of roofspace! probably full of chairs.

In fact looking at it the whole thing is very William IV. Including those window brackets that support the running strip rather than a pediment at the second to top floor. Identical to the scrolls seen on William IV chests of drawers. Definitely a late William IV style set of buildings.
