This is fascinating! I had assumed that a lot of these gross pure black Petri dish carpets were intentionally forgotten in the yard by the carpet companies so they could clean something impossibly disgusting, but apparently it's a waste management issue.
In Britain, especially rural areas, disposal rules for rugs means that unwanted area rugs often end up in the shed or used in the back garden.
Due to austerity measures, municipalities over there had raised the disposal price for large items, so you also get a lot of illegal dumping
