After a workshop in March in Milan, we are meeting next week in the woods of Leusden (ISVW) to continue our discussion of the epistemic and ethical challenges in microbiome and exposome research!
Thanks to the Descartes Centre's Seed Money, this collaborative work can thrive!

This makes me wonder how many human organs are also composed of parallel cell lineages during development. Is it so unusual that one anatomical part comes from two distinct lineages? #philbio #philsci

Scientists have viewed the brain as one organ for centuries. A Stanford Medicine-led discovery challenging that view could advance research into ALS, spinal muscular atrophy, and other neurological di...

We will sorely miss @andrameneganzin.bsky.social, but we are absolutely sure that she will take the University of Bordeaux by storm as Assistant Professor! @pacea.bsky.social is so lucky to have her!

If you are interested in human #evolution & #philbio, be sure to check out her impressive research!
Goodbye @theramseylab.bsky.social & @clpskuleuven.bsky.social … it’s been an absolute blast! ❤️🥹

Catching my next train (both physical and metaphorical) with a deep sense of gratitude.

Thank y'all!

What does it mean that biological control is organized heterarchically?
We turn common assumptions upside-down and argue that integration of control inputs ultimately takes place at the last step: in the controlled production mechanisms themselves rather than in the central nervous system. #philbio

Are stem cell types natural kinds? The answer is multifarious.

How is human impact reshaping the way organisms reproduce and evolve? Our senior researcher Arantza Etxeberria (UPV/EHU) argues that reproduction is a web of developmental, physiological & ecological relations. #PhilBio

This paper might be of interest to some people in #philbio.
For non-geneticists: effective size is not a countable number. It's a metric that tells you how fast the population loses genetic diversity, expressed as a population size. If you want to be safe in the long run, this value needs to be larger than 500. I tried to explain what it means here
Population Size in Evolutionary Biology Is More Than the Effective Size
In population genetics idealized Wright-Fisher (WF) populations are generally considered equivalent to real populations with regard to the major evolutionary processes that influence genotype and all....

I kind of did this in my book for one empirical example--explain Lande/Arnold--but that was me explaining the math. I think less is needed for understanding developmental bias. I think one can get the intuition without even learning what a matrix is. #philbio #evbio #popgen

I don’t think your wording was imprecise, I think you just didn’t bother to check whether there was such a field as philbio before declaring there wasn’t, and you’d rather sound insane by declaring that only fields that are bachelor of science degrees exist than admit a minor error.
