Re. a lot of replies to this: yes, there are workarounds, which individuals might deploy. But the schools are locked into multi-year contracts with Google Classroom—every element of which funnels students toward Google products. This is called “platform capture.” link.springer.com/chapter/10.1...

‘before this platformisation, trafficking was based on routes and several intermediaries who were drug owners in each step of the chain. Now, such “joint ventures get together at the top, buy directly from the producer and deliver directly at the end. They no longer go through intermediaries.”

@DrPen hmmm - good question. I have noticed that Learning, Media and Technology journal has had many recent papers on platformisation - perhaps there are some reflections on these issues as well, though I can't point to specific paper

In an article about the influence of games like Five Nights at Freddy’s and Poppy Playtime, researchers Tegan Pyke and Ida Martine Gard Rysjedal identify the recurring themes, and the reflections of reality, that makes these games especially unsettling. 😱

By means of a critical discourse analysis of Google’s cloud AI platform, I show how cloud companies leverage this duality to forward a process of platformisation, where they establish themselves as the central intermediaries and transform AI technologies into services to be provided at scale.

I propose a media-genealogical approach to situate this claim of ‘democratization’ within a broader development in the infrastructuralisation and platformisation of computing. I focus on three historic moments: (1) the invention of time-sharing and the idea of a ‘computer utility’ in the 1960s;

@g3om4c I suspect that, in the case of larger publishers, it is to do with platformisation and the desire to capture users within a web enclave that can be metricised, quantified, and monetised.

Or, in the case of better platforms, simply a neglect of the format, thinking that it's such a […]

Very interesting to see the game industry talk about this phenomenon as 'deprofessionalisation'. Definitely more visible now in the wake of all the layoffs, but really this has been unfolding for 15+ years now as both platformisation and gigification.

The 'deprofessionalization of video games' was on full display at PAX East
PAX East felt like a warning: explosively successful games by solo devs and small teams are great, but it could lead to a dearth of vital specialists.

A fantastic thesis - on self-worth in the taxi trade and platformisation creatively using, amongst many theoretical resources, pragmatic sociology - and a pleasure to examine it with Karen.
Grateful to my examiners, @karengregory.bsky.social & @benandersongeog.bsky.social, for an extremely pleasant and insightful conversation about my work, and for the care and attention they gave to it. It was delightful to to be able to think together with them.

Commercial enclosure of scholarly resources through IP control and platformisation are reason enough to support community-led open access book alternatives such as @openbookcollective.bsky.social to protect the future of the scholarly record and knowledge production.
Okay this is worse than I thought. A large # of academic press books (incld. a textbook I use in class) have been moved to a platform called Ebook Central. It's like Kindle paired w/ AI. No footnotes. No page #s No facsimile PDFs are available. I just wrote a lengthy complaint to my library. Sigh.
AI rant of the day. My library is using a new ebook platform for Leon Litwack's book "Trouble in Mind." You can no longer see page numbers or footnotes. And there is a running AI summary of the book next to the text. It's USELESS now.
