The paleobiogeographical history of giraffes is just crazy:

These might look like rhino-y things, but they're a completely unique type of mammal that developed while South America was an island continent: the Notoungulates.

These guys fared poorly once South America joined to North America in the Plio-Pleistocene before finally disappearing 12,000 years ago
