The #Arctic Annual Sea Ice Minimum isn't what it used to be.

There is now a huge area of ice under 1.5m thick, and only tiny patches over 3.5m thick.

Sea ice data on @polarportal is from European @osi_saf group, sea ice thickness + Greenland surface mass balance is from @dmidk.bsky.social's operational models + #grace satellite data is from our partners @dtucryo created as part of the @esaclimate..

The #Arctic sea ice isn't what it used to be.
The area covered is similar, but now much thinner.

Temperatures up to 20°C above normal in large parts of the Arctic, even above freezing on Svalbard. See more on our @PolarPortal!

In Greenland we have the #polarportal to keep a near real-time view on what's going on with the ice sheet, in #Antarctica we don't really have quite the same thing, but I'm happy to announce that our SMB data +that of colleagues from Belgium is now on #SCAR #AntClimNow :

Makes a lot of sense when you look at the prevailing winds the last few weeks eh on @polarportal.bsky.social

Incidentally, while this is happening in the US, we have been working quite hard on the @polarportal (well @MartinStendel + out @dmidk colleagues have, I've mainly tried to make helpful comments), the old website is still up giving the latest on #arctic #seaice #Greenland #icesheet and other […]

Polarportal is still working.
Big melting event incoming?

Meanwhile in the Arctic,it's pretty damn warm (again)
Check out he last year on the @polarportal https://polarportal.dk/en/weather/nbsp/current-weather/

This big melt event in western Greenland is certainly preconditioning the break up of the sea ice at my field site in NW Greenland

Hi Martin, do you happen to know where I can get archived daily melt area data? The page I found only has data from 2019 on. Thanks! download.dmi.dk/Research_Pro...

Somewhat ironically, or perhaps appropriately, the #PHORS2024 meeting is taking place in one of the few blue (colder than average) spots in the northern hemisphere as the #polarportal #weather data shows

Eliot, you can use the date picker, set it to any date within a few years after 2017. Then you will see the 2017 curve. I haven't found a way to get the underlying data values in a tabular form. People have questioned why polarportal 2017 values aren't lower.

If I didn't have 2 papers to (re)submit and two reports due at the ECMWF and ESA, I would write a quick blog post on how interesting it is that our modelled melt over the #greenlabd #icesheet on the @polarportal and the satellite derived melt areas almost but don't quite match, and why that […]

I’ll point out I’m a farmer myself, but almost all these problems with rivers, lakes, and even estuaries relate back to widespread intensive farming and its huge volumes of what’s essentially toxic waste.

Components of the total mass balance TMB, hydr. years 1987-2023.
SMB: surface mass balance (snowfall - runoff),
MMB: marine mass balance (calving of icebergs),
BMB: basal mass balance (friction).
2022/23 is the 27th year in a row with negative TMB.
