For #PalacesAndGardens theme #PompAndPatterns. The Maya Queen K’ab’al Xook from Yaxchilán (seated) wears a huipil blouse whose patterns are still used among modern Maya weavers today. #Mexico #Maya #Mesoamerica #Yaxchilan #history #heritage #weaving #handwoven
This image shows Yaxchilan Lintel 24, a Classic Maya limestone relief carving created around 723–726 AD that depicts a royal bloodletting ceremony. King Itzamnaaj Bahlam III (also known as Shield Jaguar II) holds a burning torch, while his primary wife, Queen Lady K’ab’al Xook, kneels before him. Maya Huipil, a traditional hand-woven tunic from the Tzeltal Maya community of Tenejapa, Chiapas, Mexico. The top portion of the garment is heavily adorned with intricate, geometric brocade weaving. It features rows of black diamond shapes enclosing vibrant red fills. Tiny accents of bright yellow, neon blue, and pink are meticulously stitched inside and around the diamonds.
