#PostHoc
I think about Philando Castille often. He did everything right, he was driving with his family, he was a good man who did food nutrition work for schools. It was a clear cut racist stop and use of his owning of a firearm as a posthoc justification to murder him, and the NRA said nothing about it.
ICE killing #AlexPretti should remind you of police killing #PhilandoCastille. Both men had concealed weapon permits, did not draw their guns, & were killed in Minn. These homicides are the price of unaccountable policing. These deaths are variations on the same fatal theme.

We should call it 'posthoc' rather than postdoc since it's basically spent trying to justify why you got a PhD

PostHoc mobile AC is expensive and less than ideal, it can be inefficient, but it's extremely useful that it exists.

Here's a secret. Only about 10% of UK residents actually truly genuinely believe in the /idea/ of a constitutional monarchy. The rest are just knee deep in "if it aint broke why fix it" and invent posthoc rationalisations that make their curious little archaism actually "a good idea".

Gamers seem convinced writers have enormous power over the direction of the game, when in fact we’re often there to justify gameplay decisions posthoc

If ONLY writers had the power gamers believe we have, games would probably be a lot better 🤷
game devs: what are the myths that a lot of players of games think are true about making games that are completely untrue? If you could snap your fingers and they suddenly all knew the truth about it what would it be?

love some posthoc rationalization that takes no responsibility

Der #PostHoc-Fehlschluss ist insbesondere in der Pseudomedizin häufig anzutreffen:

"Ich war drei Tage lang erkältet, habe dann homöopathische Globuli genommen, und drei Tage später war die Erkältung geheilt. Globuli helfen also gegen Erkältungskrankheiten!"

Also bringen Regenschirme gutes Wetter!"

Jesus said the coming of the Kingdom of God was imminent. It never came.
There's only one rational conclusion:
It didn't happen, so Jesus wasn't the messiah.
Somehow instead we got 2000 years of posthoc rationalisation for how Jesus IS the messiah and he's totally coming back any minute now

bro thought natural selection was an extant force that can be observed in present time and not a posthoc rationalisation for the reason evolution progressed in the way it did 💀

i studied at their university and then wrote an excellent thesis on causality so they awarded me the title of posthoc

For 500 years Russia has posthoc justified a lot of its shite with "from birth, our state was under attack from the West by the Poles and the Lithuanians" but the funny thing is that before Ivan III attacked us, we had only fought like two wars and both were "oh yeah that happened" affairs.
It is of course worth noting that this isn't even historically accurate on a literal reading level, because to my knowledge the Grand Duchy literally never annexed a territory from the Principality of Moscow. It's not even good victim blaming.

I think there is a way to do exploratory research very rigorously. Just use full transparency. Publish the entire github history for the analysis chain, nits, zits, and all. And of course, focus more on the strength of evidence than posthoc narrative building.
I really enjoyed reading this world view in Nature about the importance of exploratory research in the social sciences by @balazsaczel.bsky.social and am wondering what people think. Do you generally agree with his point? 🧪@natureportfolio.bsky.social www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Let the data talk: embrace exploratory research
Open-ended research is essential to building solid hypotheses in the social sciences — without it, even the best-planned analyses can fail.

An extralegal level. I don't know what posthoc arguments will come up because we aren't there yet but "sorry we can't get rid of hitler" doesn't sound acceptable

Surely a lottery would be better than reading these absolute nonsense, utterly posthoc justifications.

Lets publish more untested predictions! they show real foresight, not posthoc model tweaking to fit observed data
I agree so long as the computational models make predictions that other models do not, and those predictions are then tested.

Whilst a cynical, but fair, argument is that a lot of it was posthoc posturing to justify cuts, May was also way more willing to criticise policing on an institutional basis than most frontline politicians are

Fascism has nearly always unilaterally come to power by manipulating the vulnerabilities of liberal democracies this idea that they got always get into power by violent takeovers is a posthoc justification /con
I can't stop thinking about Jon Stewart saying that bc Trump acquired power through legal and legitimate systems we can't call him fascist. I know Jon is touch and go but this one is just baffling. Historically, few are the fascist govts that didn't come to power through at least semi-legit means

related, some of the userbase sees technical hackfixes as intentional decisions and will invent posthoc rationalizations against fixing them properly. e.g. i'm sure there's a lot of people who genuinely think reply to a deleted post making it impossible to navigate upthread is somehow good

polymarket has hundreds of thousands of daily active users, >10k new accounts created per day, and millions of transactions per day.

posthoc identifying a half dozen new accounts as suspicious based on outcomes is very different from drawing inferences because the accounts were created or bets made

maybe sakurai's become jaded enough by speculation culture that he knows he can say whatever he wants and people will always find posthoc justifications for it

Dialectic also requires critical thinking.
There's nothing about any posthoc political 'thinking' which requires truthfulness.
