Canva - lightened and used an antique filter to bring out the beige. Color selected the dark areas to navy blue. Cropped to make the people more noticeable.

I have the feeling i am walking to the limits from what I can do on the moment. This was my 4th try and still not so happy with it. See Alt
The origal photo from Rock was more a pale blue flat colour. I have use the raw file and first edit this one. Than i have use the different possibilities in Snapseed to give the warm red colours and the shade at the left of the picture. With the sky i am still not so happy.

My edits on left.

I was working in Photoshop and could not get a duotone using the methods I used to use, so I created this one using a gradient map with blue and yellow. More details in alt text.

I tried converting the image to black and white then creating a duotone using the foreground and background method, but I could only get one color plus black. I tried a lot of different methods and nothing worked. I did get a duotone using the gradient map technique without converting to grayscale. I like the result actually. Rock's gorgeous original image of tan/brown sand dunes that have both smooth surfaces and one dune with a rippled surface. The dunes have a lot of contrast, with very dark shadows on the right and lighter dunes on the left due to the sun hitting the tops. The sky is clear and blue.

After converting to grayscale, I adjusted the tonal range with a luminance S-curve and used a blue channel curve to create indigo shadows and warm ivory highlights.

Original image of a building reflected the n the water - now flipped vertically so that we’re looking up through the water at the building above the surface. Used lots of masking, color and contrast editing to try to achieve an underwater effect.

For this week's #PostProcess #DuoTonechallenge, I changed to B&W, increased contrast, increased texture of the striped dunes, made curve adjustments in blue and green channels, applied negative vignette, and flipped image for just for fun. (Edits in Lightroom).

I started by turning the original photo into B&W in Snapseed and saving it. Then I went back to the color image and played around with Curves to get the colors where I wanted them. I also used Brush and Selective to adjust the lighting and saved a few different versions along the way. After that, I used Double Exposure to layer the B&W image over the color ones and see how they would look together. I experimented with a few combinations and even tried adding different color “screens” to see how they would change the overall feel. After all that experimenting, these are the two I liked best!

Another phenomenal original Rock image to work with and thank you my friend for that, such a pleasure to edit from as always ☺️ This week I decided to edit with red and white as my duo tones in mind as l had the blue with the sky already for a topical Post Process. So, off to light room and multiple free hand masks for the dunes, sky and then a radial mask for the top right of the dune range were applied. I then adjusted the colour, details and lighting for each individual mask to reflect the patriotic theme l was going for to give the end result shown. My usual slight vignetting and a white border frame finished off my edit this week.

Last #Duotone I took inspiration from the Matrix. This time I went with 1990s Total Recall.

It’s still a duotone when the highlights and shadows are two versions of the same colour isn’t it?! 😬
A photo of a desert landscape. When zoomed in, two tiny spots to the left of the image are revealed to be people walking. The whole image is shades of a deep reddish orange, to emulate the surface of Mars in the movie Total Recall. The original photo was taken by @rjrock.bsky.social and edited by me. The image was edited in Darktable. I started by activating the Colour Calibration module, and converting the image to black and white using the Fuji Across 100 preset. Then I activated the Sigmoid module and adjusted the blacks slightly to deepen the shadows (my reference image had quite deep shadows) - I normally let it do its own thing, so this was weird. I then activated the Colour Balance RGB module, and used it to introduce the colours to the highlights and shadows - even though they may both look a reddish orange they are different colours, they have different hue numbers and everything. So technically it counts as a duotone. Then I used the Colour Zones module to effectively dodge and burn the image. Finally I added an orange tinted graduated density filter (with a reduced opacity) to accentuate the overall colour of the image.

Basically , I just minimized the overall view by focusing on one area with distinct varied textures by changing the effect to watercolor and then tweaking the tint, temp. and saturation until I was happy with the colors.. thank you, Rock for providing the original photo..🤗📸

Build the black and white first. Set contrast and tonal range before any color goes on. A weak monochrome makes a weak duotone. 2. Pick your pair. Shadow color first, then highlight color. 3. Map them. Use any tool that tints shadows and highlights separately. 4. Set the balance. Move where the two colors meet. That one move changes the mood. The pair: complementary, close neighbors, or a quiet off-black and off-white. The balance: which color owns the midtones. The contrast: deep and graphic, or soft and compressed. TOOLS (any will do) Photoshop: a Gradient Map adjustment layer. Put a Curves or Levels layer below the gradient map so it shapes the grayscale before the colors go on. Image > Mode > Duotone also works once the image is 8-bit grayscale. Lightroom: Color Grading. It does everything Split Toning did and more, with tint wheels for shadows, midtones and highlights. Tint the shadows and highlights, then use Balance. Anything else: any editor with shadow/highlight tinting or a gradient map. TIPS Color can expose banding and noise in smooth skies and water. Check at 100%. In Photoshop’s gradient map, the Dither box smooths the fill. Don’t push Clarity or Texture on smooth areas to compensate. It amplifies the noise. Your dark color doesn’t have to be near-black. Navy, plum and deep green all work.
