How it started: trimmed greenware, smooth before any carving. Then the carved lid after bisque firing, before glaze.

Let me know what you think!

For once, I'm sharing a piece I really don't like, but that somehow got finished.

Instagram doesn't show you often enough how messy pottery can be.

I have a dedicated firing program just for this clay, because I love it too much to stop using it.

Freshly trimmed. This is a vase I threw for my mom, and there's a video about it in the works...

Apparently, I decided a regular pumpkin wasn’t enough… so I made one out of clay. 😂🎃
Now for the carving, details, and hoping it turns out the way I pictured it!

I still have no idea what happened here 🥲
One minute I had a cute little spotted dog, and the next… he was losing his spots right where the sun doesn’t shine.
Every little piece that fell off broke my heart a little more 😭💔

I've been revisiting some of my very first cup designs, this time with a straighter shape.

I threw and trimmed them mostly by feel, without much measuring, which made for a set of cups that are similar but never quite identical.

And how it got there, from carved clay to bisque to glaze.

#potteryprocess #carvedceramicsTan bisque-fired vase with a rough textured surface and a carved wing-shaped panel on the lower left.

This must have been my first vessel where I had to stand up to be able to throw it and reach all the way to the bottom.

Sunbathing before the kiln.

Sometimes I like to make sure certain pieces are fully "bone dry" before firing, and the easiest way is often to just let them bask in the sun for a while.

Quite an effective trimming day.
Freshly thrown, trimmed, and stamped (finally used this big stamp!), big pots are ready.

Close-ups of a few pieces from the Strata series #pottery #ceramics #handmade #potteryprocess #手作陶器

This is where it landed. Six pieces, the first of many. Strata builds successive layers of carved surfaces and glazes. Each piece starts carved, then layered with glazes—resisted or pooling into cuts. A record of mark-making in clay.

This is a handmade ceramic gluggle jug koi fish. It was such a fun piece to make. Many hours invested from start to finish and it was completely worth it.

From clay to kiln to finished piece
I loved watching these spoon holders and tea light lanterns come to life. The glaze turned out just right!

A big, bold, brightly coloured porcelain vessel--because it's going to snow in Calgary for the spring long weekend. Sometimes you have to make your own spring!

O hai.

Here is a chonky boi ready to be bisqued like a biscuit. Then glazed like butter, fired crispy like a crème brûlée, and delivered to you as a possible desk treasure or wall decoration.

Oh hello.

Here is Skull Vessel 4 for which i am most pleased. The bottom isn’t as blue as I imagined so i will experiment w/ some underglaze or a glaze underneath.

I’ll be doing more of these adding an art deco rib cage 🩻.

Materials used are in the alt text.

O hai, me again.

Skull Vessel 4.
I went with a fancy interlocking jaw and tongue lid.
For the glazing i used stuff I haven’t tried before, so this should be fun because who needs test tiles - not me. (lol)

O hai,

Here is Skull Vessel 3.

Was supposed to fade from orange to turquoise. I used a light flux to achieve drip, but it didn’t turn out as I expected (first time). Next time I’ll just do the fade manually with layers.

Materials used are in the alt text.

O hai

Trying out some more adventurous glazing. I typically just focus on underglaze, because i can safely predict the final results. But glazing is like alchemy, and the final results can be a surprise.

Here is skull vessel 2.
Orange to turquoise ombré.

O hai,

Been really sick for a month and getting a lot of rest. So my studio time has been limited and it’s driving me nuts.

Anywho, here’s what’s in the queue. Two skull vessels made with Red Sculpture Clay 108.

Doing some new, fancy glazing on these!
