Tomorrow we'll host a special 50th edition of the Evolutionary Pragmatics Forum. Bart Geurts, Cathy Crockford (@taichimpproject.bsky.social), Marlen Fröhlich (@marlenfroehlich.bsky.social), and I will discuss the current state of our knowledge of pragmatics in great ape communication.

fuck yeah

I also appreciate the syntax, pragmatics, and social meaning of "Permission to lib the fuck out?". A whole world of ideology and affect lives in the quasi-ironic use of "lib out".

And, likewise, we are missing the forest for the trees of mundane matters of classroom pragmatics if we don’t attend to what is a radical cultural reorientation of higher education that is being carried out by corporations like Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, IBM, Anthropic, etc.

"fanatical about Israel"

Zionism, Jewish or otherwise, was never primarily driven by "fanaticism" of any kind.

The major players have all been clear eyed pragmatics about the goals involved in creating, funding, & supporting the zionist entity.

Variability in how strongly counterfactual antecedents license negativity-tags correlates with their at-issueness. I presented this finding at #XPrag '25, the '26 DGfS meeting (slides). It bears on whether #at-issueness constrains #anaphora.

also re arm and the industrial pragmatics that's v good to know i just genuinely didn't know that at all!!! it's also honestly...

arm and risc are easier in substantial ways than x86 bcz they both *have* formal semantics, even if risc's are a bit more accessible

笑裏藏刀 - Hide a Knife Behind a Smile. Here, that's Philosemitic policies, support of Zionism

李代桃僵 - i.e., Sacrifice Israel to preserve the West

假途伐虢 - Pit Iran against Israel

以逸待勞 - Wait at leisure while the enemy is burdened

借刀殺人 - Kill With a Borrowed Knife

Pragmatics. Ideologically antisemitic

I am talking more about pragmatics. I know many people speak pragmatically rather than 'truly.' But it's ineffective as political messaging since it requires insular language to convey the intended message, which you and I get, but others do not.

All the same, have a good one :)

The very bane of our fucking life, this one. We routinely have humans insist we said or meant (x) when we actually said or meant (y).

Pragmatics are neuronormatively defined and just lousy with allistic bias. Always an uphill slog under their contemptuous, elevated nose. Oh we could go ON! 🪔

In linguistic pragmatics, the question "do machines think?" is less about cognition than it is an attitude the speaker takes toward the subject.

"Do submarines swim?" is an analogous query. What attitude is it that makes the standard predication, "submarines set sail" seem inadequate?

There is a joke among software developers that the favorite phrase of a sr. software engineer is "It depends," because almost always it does depend on what you want, the time you have, costs, the most important factors, etc. The pragmatics are why we call it software engineering.

LLMs ignore that.

“Interest in words and how they influence debate”

Unsure how someone with genuine knowledge of semiotics/ pragmatics pulls a mega usage gaffe of this magnitude… clearly it’s a statement you use to pretend some sort of intellectualism. But use for rhetorical manipulation (which you demonstrate here)

But I understand sarcasm, love word play, and yes, pragmatics are really difficult for me and I spend so much energy trying to figuring out to read people, but I also don't engage in repetitive behavior unless constantly touching my hair to soothe me counts.

Centrists, moderates, Blue Dogs, Blue MAGA, etc...are pragmatics. Say/Do whatever they think will help their team win. No ideological basis, just a numbers game that requires manipulating the system & the people for their own gain. Differences with the Republicans are merely a triangulation game.

i feel ya, i would much rather talk about environmental and labour effects, the relation to the military industrial complex i'd rather strike at the root, and i would rather engage with the pragmatics of how these things affect our day to day work!
