Prescriptivism FTW

😉
Linguists describe language and its use, rather than prescribe its use. I understand. Nevertheless, for the love of all that is holy, this thing / is not a "backslash." Come on, people.

I try and avoid prescriptivism but in this case I have a humble request for everyone

It’s Bluesky, not BlueSky

That has nothing to do with linguistic prescriptivism, I just really dislike Thoreau.

Prescriptivism works.
“Barbecue” is slow cooked meat. An afternoon of grilling hot dogs and hamburgers is a cookout. This is your last warning.

Linguistic prescriptivism is a form of racism and we should be far less tolerant of it
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?

There is no “correct” way to use language. Prescriptivism is bunk
What's something that experts/practitioners in your field universally agree upon, but that remains a "hot take" among the general public?

I have gotten so much education and training warning me of the dangers of prescriptivism but I can’t accept “unalive” I’m sorry
If you write ‘unalive’ in prose or character dialogue, in your NOVEL - which I have seen TWICE NOW - I will immediately wince and full body cringe. The TikTokification of words has to stop. Your character almost DIED or was KILLED in your novel. They were not almost ‘unalived’.

The semantic creep in the use of the word “aesthetic” will never be acceptable to me. Condemn me for my uncharacteristic display of prescriptivism if you must, but I care not! The word does not mean “appealing”!

I've found descriptivism works better than prescriptivism:

*(uses slur)*

"Do you hate [demographic]?"

"What!? No!"

"Oh, well you said a [demographic] slur, so I thought you hated [demographic]."

nothing makes me madder than language prescriptivism. if you deny the plastic, living nature of language you shutter off whole layers of the human spirit.

There's a lot unexamined about the unstated prescriptivism and norms around non-binary identity in Western, anglophonic contexts, but it's really operative in how the Woman is constructed as this binary, regressive, unqueerable positionality.

linguistic prescriptivism is like a viral reservoir for platonism

Generally not a fan of prescriptivism when it comes to cycling attire but this is my one exception:

Prescriptivism rarely works.

"he's not a pedophile because the minors he raped were pubescent" is not only trying to give cover for a pedophile but it's also linguistic prescriptivism, which is less of a moral wrong than the pedophile apologia but is still a moral wrong
