#Prescriptivism
Bro I’m gonna start saying ”impactive” just to stunt on your prescriptivism

Oh Christ is this normative prescriptivism?

There’s no point to this thought; I just think it’s an interesting case of how the two dogmatic camps—art-as-representation and art-as-didacticism/prescriptivism—clash

The prescriptivism towards queer identities and the fakeclaiming of disabled individuals are most certainly interwoven. It's all about testimonial injustice, we are not deemed capable of defining our own reality and experiences.

I feels that a lot of the time prescriptivism quickly devolves into whining

the autistic drive toward prescriptivism has been a disaster for the human race

I've gotten into watching a fair bit of linguistics YouTube and my two primary observations are that the Descriptivism vs Prescriptivism debate is a false dichotomy (because it's actually about power and enforcement of authority), and I feel like a lot of people are dancing around the fact that one

It occurs to me the debate we're having is similar to an ongoing one in the field of linguistics, namely that of prescriptivism (rules established by linguists determine correctness) versus descriptivism (usage, which can only be observed and recorded by linguists, determines correctness).

I've found descriptivism works better than prescriptivism:

*(uses slur)*

"Do you hate [demographic]?"

"What!? No!"

"Oh, well you said a [demographic] slur, so I thought you hated [demographic]."

i get to have little a prescriptivism, as a treat

Genre is meant to be fluid and descriptive. When it moves beyond that it ceases to be a useful descriptor. Genre ought not to be prescriptive. Genre exists to be a way of helping us preserve and discus a story. Genre prescriptivism is gatekeeping for weenies and hacks.

Don’t be a weenie.

something something polysemy linguistic prescriptivism
September 24, 2026 at 10:20 PM
By the way, it should be prescriptivism in my previous post, not prescriptionism. I take quite a few meds and discuss them, so when I typed prescriptivism, my autocorrect decided I meant the other one and changed it. After the last major update it decided it knows what I mean better than I do. 🤷‍♀️

no, it's called existential dread at the decline of your usefulness and pertinence in the modern world masquerading as prescriptivism, but i guess that's par for the course for a stylebook
This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

managers are always editing my correct em dash usage to incorrect en dash usage. and it does not bother me at all I swear not even a little because I know prescriptivism is wrong and my soul is a place of perfect peace.

suddenly switching sides to prescriptivism for this issue

i keep my prescriptivism on a leash, but she's barking

Prescriptivism vs descriptivism strikes again

I get what you mean, but please forgive me:

Christianity has defined European politics for millennia—secularism is secularism only because it’s NOT the church. Which means secularism is a Christian tradition…

The issue is ontological prescriptivism, not a given religious tradition.

And I hate that I have these reactions sometimes because in almost every other respect when it comes to words and language I'm a descriptivist and hate prescriptivism.
September 21, 2026 at 4:47 PM
I've said it before and I'll say it again: extreme linguistic prescriptivism is a gateway to fascism.
To the grammar police, language is something to be constrained and controlled, striped of its vivacity and organic nature, made stale and lifeless.

To the grammar stiffs, the creativity and diversity and individuality of language is the enemy.
September 20, 2026 at 2:31 PM
They say that but I say that linguistic prescriptivism is pretty fash-coded
