I have referred to this (among other things) for nearly two decades as "privileging the lie" -- it gives the liar the topic he wants
A really important point that @jamisonfoser.bsky.social makes here is that even the "crime is actually down" stories still play into Trump's hands because it still frames the National Guard deployments as being about crime instead of being military occupations by an authoritarian leader.
