PrepOctober, or My Unfailing Optimism
I plan to do Novel November again this year. Novel November is the inheritor of NaNoWriMo, only with corporate backing. The corporate backing comes from ProWritingAid, which is ironic because they have some ties with AI in their proofreading interface, and NaNo’s stance on generative AI was part of that organization’s downfall. (A good part of their downfall was also some unsavory predation on their notes forums).

Yes, I saw that one but haven't really explored it. ProWritingAid runs one as well. I don't know how many are out there now.

This is why I don't like AI as it currently works. I wrote, "It is a long story."

ProWritingAid suggested "The story stretches over a great length," and "The tale unfolds across an extensive span."

Sorry, but I prefer, "It is a long story." I think it is a human thing to say.

I think of a product like ProWritingAid, which states that they do not train on the content that they check. There are some features that they recommend disabling if there are any concerns about what the AI does do to help folks with anxiety about the amount of AI usage.

And... there it is

I genuinely wonder if some of these organisations have ever actually met a writer, i.e. someone who wants to tell stories, as opposed to someone who churns out books as a springboard for selling other services

A sentence checker passes a novel with blue eyes in chapter two and dark eyes in chapter fourteen; every sentence is correct. The mistake lives between the sentences. That needs its own pass. https://www.vsprose.com/blog/grammarly-vs-vsprose-vs-prowritingaid-fiction-writers/

I found a program that I think is /technically/ not ai? ProWritingAid has apparently been around for awhile, but its ai features are paywalled, while its base features are more akin to spellcheck.

At the least, it's useful in punctuation, but I wouldn't trust it with anything else.

Prowritingaid is soooo prudish. If I wrote 'fucking' I didn't mean 'messing'.

NaNaWriMo got into bed with a generative A.I. slop-vom factory. NanoWriMo then turned to dust as a direct result. Now the slop-vom factory is trotting out the badly resurrected Nano Corpse WaRioWriMo to make some cash off the whole mess.
Gen A.I. in a nutshell.

A $4.99 ebook at 70% royalty earns you $3.49. Sudowrite, Grammarly and ProWritingAid together: 151 copies sold a year before you break even on the tools. Do that sum before the renewal. https://www.vsprose.com/blog/the-hidden-cost-of-subscription-writing-software/

I think I might be late to the party on this, but ProWritingAid has taken up the torch that was dropped by NaNoWriMo! Their challenge is called Novel November. I am STOKED. Gonna do a short story collection. Planning has already started!

Sad to have to cancel ProWritingAid. I've used it since 2018, but it's transformed into a bloated resource-hungry monster and I just can't stand it any more.

I am nervous about using AI too heavily when editing content. I see no issue with spelling and grammar. I see where editing could pose problems. When is it too much? I use #Grammarly and would want to use #ProWritingAid for a novel if I ever write one.
