A 'new' #pterosaur - actually known since 1870 - has been recognised by Rubi Pêgas, Kamila Bandeira, Borja Holgado and myself from the English Cretaceous, and it includes great brain data! It's Hintighernia edingerae (hin-ti-yer-nee-a ee-din-gu-ree) tetzoo.com/blog/2026/10...
A New Tapejarid Pterosaur from the English Cretaceous — Tetrapod Zoology
Among the most interesting and exciting of pterosaurs – in my humble opinion – are the tapejarids, a short-snouted, toothless, often elaborately crested group vaguely akin to the sometimes gigantic, s...

Congrats to Darren and the team for describing a new pterosaur! And what a fascinating discovery, the brain scans are so interesting! It almost looks like a mammal's brain to me.

I've wanted to name a pterosaur after Tilly Edinger for a while but I guess you beat me to it. Love seeing reassessment of historical specimens revealing cryptic diversity.

while fragmentary, the holotype of hintighernia offers fascinating insight into the neuroanatomy of tapejarids, and the paper also discusses other fragmentary tapejarid remains from cambridge greensand!

-it was also thought to be a pterosaur! This, of course, became outdated! But as it was being reclassified in 2001, some complete pterosaur remains that were assigned to Ornithodesmus were found to be a whole new genus of pterosaur, now named Istiodactylus! (2/2)

This name is a call-back to the etymology of Tapejara - 1st member of this pterosaur group to be named (Tapejara Kellner, 1989) - AND honours Tilly Edinger, the late great pioneer of palaeo-brain research. Our paper is out in Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society academic.oup.com/zoolinnean/a...

I have so many ideas I haven't even drawn yet. So many ideas that I might explode.

Yes even ideas for that little dopey pterosaur standing next to Lusty

I painted this Pterro-Sphinx from @forgeofice.bsky.social a while back but did some touch ups and added verdigris tonight. A brilliant piece of scenery, go order one from Alex (in the US) or @fenrisgames.com if you’re on the other side of the Atlantic.

Congratulations! 🤘 I can't imagine how exciting it must be to discover a brand-spanking new pterosaur from fossils that were discovered about 150 years ago. 😄

New interactive globes on Pteros! Most of our pterosaur pages now show where each animal lived, on the Earth as it was then. Spin it, lay it flat, tap a fossil site. Pteranodon's fossil sites sit in the sea that once split North America in two. fossi.ls/pteros-maps
