NZ boardroom climbs 0.6% after RBNZ survey on inflation - Market close

Gee, I hope no-one planning to travel this Xmas, or buy anything from overseas.

Inflation expected to hit 4.4%, NZD slumps one full cent, as RBNZ holds OCR stedy by a vote of 4 to 3 #NewZealand #kiwi
Reserve Bank holds OCR at 2.75% in split decision
The Reserve Bank (RBNZ) shocked by holding its benchmark interest rate unchanged in a split decision but left the door open for further rate rises to counter stronger inflation.

Early Bird post out for paying subscribers to @The Kākā. The RBNZ is about to bite back at the PM’s unwise decision to take the credit last year and early this year for lower interest rates. #nzpol thekaka.substack.com/p/early-bird...
Early Bird: Rate hike coming back to bite Luxon
Markets see 96% chance RBNZ will hike OCR by 25 bps to 3.0% at 2 pm; Luxon claimed credit for lower rates in 2025 & early 2026, which The Post-$ describes as ‘ridiculous & dangerous crankery’

The Reserve Bank shocked markets with a tight 4-3 vote to hold the OCR at 2.75%.

Will this reprieve last, or are higher rates inevitable?

I'd like to think RBNZ looked at some of the real leading indicators, but it is more likely that they didn't want to be accused of bringing down the Govt (they have form - that rate hike in 2015/16 hit swing voters in the run-up to the 2017 election).

Nicola Willis has probably threatened the governor of the rbnz with her job and her credibility.

... things start levelling off in mid-2026. Friends, that was the economy, wobbling, drunk, and slipping into a ditch. RBNZ increased debt servicing costs, government spluttered word salads, and the economy stalled *months ago* as the commentariat talked up the recovery. [3/n]

Westpac has dropped its 18-month mortgage rate to 5.19%, now the lowest of the major banks. This aggressive move follows the RBNZ’s surprise split-vote hold at 2.75% last week. Banks are clearly hungry for volume as the housing market remains soft. #NZProperty #RBNZ

It’s interesting that National has said next to nothing on the campaign trail about jobs or the fact that a quarter of our young people are unemployed. And that’s because they think unemployment is a useful tool - and why removing the RBNZ employment mandate was one of the first things they did

The RBNZ’s 4-3 split to hold the OCR at 2.75% is a "hawkish hold." With inflation at 3.7% and a December hike looming, the reprieve for borrowers is brief. Record first-home buyer activity (28%) faces a reality check as values continue a 0.5% monthly slide. #NZProperty #RBNZ

Good to hear - on the balance of a split-decision🤔 - the RBNZ asserting some common sense.

Am also glad that imminent 'events' have not clouded the decisions of this august 'independent' institution.

🙏🏾.

RBNZ Governor Breman: partial inflation figures and labour data will be key in coming weeks
October 28, 2026 at 2:28 AM
Maybe they have finally started looking at real life leading indicators? More likely that they didn't want to be blamed forever by the ghouls for a Labour victory. I still think rbnz decisions got English booted out.

I had a few words to say about the OCR decision – and how RBNZ's mildly expansionary 2.75% OCR rate is being undermined by bank profiteering, resulting in retail interest rates that are much too high. And how RBNZ is refusing to address this known issue

Bank profiteering means the RBNZ’s management of the OCR has stopped working
OPINION: The effects of holding the OCR steady will be muted for consumers because of the behaviour of the Australian-owned banks.

Gyles write up: Guv Breman sides with new externals on MPC, giving 4-3 against the full-time RBNZ officials.
I'm no hawk, but c'mon, nipping inflation in the bud has been mantra for aeons, 'til today.
Clearly, & Greens/Lab should say it, the economy is so munted that Breman didn't want to kill it.
"Stunned" say the orthodox economists.

This is akin to FBI's Comey opening investigation into Clinton's emails and throwing 2016 US election, he said breathlessly in hyperbolic contortions
