Ford government scrapped Toronto affordable housing requirements after pushback from three REITs, documents show
Rules requiring affordable housing were rewritten by the Doug Ford government after at least two REITs warned the quotas could result in no new housing built at all.

We should defund private equity and REITs by building so much housing that their portfolios stop appreciating.
August 10, 2025 at 11:33 PM
And again, one of the ways you can tell that homebuilding is bad for REITs is that REITs explicitly say this to their shareholders.

it's kind of odd, you would think developers (as opposed to landlords or REITs) would be in favor of Moar Housing, but it's not that simple
For anyone who cares to pay attention, the fact that major developers are lining up behind the NIMBY mayoral candidate tells you a lot about real-world housing politics and who the real shills tend to be in local YIMBY/NIMBY fights. www.nytimes.com/2025/09/08/n...

It's also just illiterate when it comes to the issues at hand. A central part of the YIMBY argument is that building more homes undermines the power of incumbent landlords and REITs.
people like Sirota, who have an almost pathological opposition to building more housing, fascinate me

my big low-hanging fruit is healthcare REITs, which primarily exist as a way to extract enormous profits from "nonprofit" hospitals
Your single best "we could remove this with very little damage to the system as it is almost completely vestigal and it would see meaningful cost decreases" are PBMs.

But very few people even know PBMs exist, and they like to keep it that way.

Good quarter for the touch grass economy: Chipotle, Starbucks, office REITs, movie theaters

Struggling: Netflix, Meta

Eight days ago I said one of the signs the bubble was bursting was if data center REITs like Fermi were in trouble. Yesterday Fermi had a $150m tenant pull out and its stock dropped 40%. All roads lead to The Smiling Man!

Actually, there is an easy answer. We need to flood the market with no-profit housing and nationalize REITs. We need to stop pretending that this issue has no obvious solutions.
Home ownership is out of reach for many Canadians. Prime Minister Mark Carney’s housing plan may keep it that way.

*with government encouragement!

This is what happens when you allow investors to mine people's retirement savings through REITs.

But that's not the point. It would be awfully convenient if REITs didn't have to withhold tax from dividends, and their shareholders could just choose to pay tax later.

That's not permitted.

the big advantage of single-payer is that it creates an entity with enough power to tell hospitals and pharmaceutical companies to go fuck themselves.

the consistently highest-yielding investment in the United States for a long time now, beyond a few individual stocks, has been hospital REITs.
This got posted on Twitter and is a good example of what I've been talking about. YOU clearly think it's ridiculous to charge $275K for administering failed CPR to a dying woman with a DNR. You know who else thinks that? The insurance company. But most of the comments are mad they didn't pay it.

REITs and their investors don't get to choose how and when tax is paid.

The law required that the REIT pay tax on its dividends immediately, rather than waiting up to 21 months until its shareholders file and pay tax.

The tax is still due.

This is NOT OKAY.

Gift link. Singaporean investors are buying Canadian REITs.

Foreign owners should not be allowed to own real estate investment companies like this, & REITs should be •outlawed• in Canada.

These motherfuckers are gaming rent & driving it up 7-10% a year nationally. END IT.
