I haven't been #lichen posting regularly but hope to resume. Here is some Rinodina pityrea from trunk base of an old poplar.

Make sure you tune into BBC #Countryfile on Sunday 14th December to catch lichenologist, David Hill talk about the wonderful diversity of lichens that inhabit this pre-historic movement. More information here: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m... #lichens Photo credit: David Hill

This ancient Pedunculate Oak in Fairlight Glen (Hastings Cliff to Pett Beach SSSI) is covered in the very southern lichen, Rinodina roboris, with its deep black apothecia & green thallus, & Lecanactis abietina (an old wood lichen). It also has epiphytic Polypodium sp. on its boughs; very dessicated.

Rinodina robaris var robaris. Sorry up-north lichenologists, you are not going to see this much; it is a very down-south UK lichen. Common on wayside and pasture woodland ancient oaks in Sussex. I enjoy seeing it because of its thick-margined wobbly apothecia rims. Parham Park SSSI

Just a thought but perhaps Rinodina oleae (was Rinodina gennarii) for the last?

Pigmented 2-celled ascospores with a black band over the septum points me towards Rinodina bischoffii - on limestone from the old quarry in northern Hessia I've visited this summer. #Lichen

A tough nut to crack. #lichen #misidentifyinglichens
A crustose lichen green with black apothecia. It keys out to genus Rinodina which seems fitting for me, but then the complications begin.

(Chemistry is all negative except a very dubious K faint yellow????)

Closer look makes the picture even busier - in this close-up we see several more lichen species: likely Myriolecis dispersa, Acarospora (perhaps A. fuscata), possibly Verrucaria, and possibly Rinodina (R. oleae?). The “& Co” is almost always larger than we think

I was reading about L. gangaleoides recently and it mentioned that there are green tinged lookalikes in the Rinodina genus
Lichens marins - Lecanora gangaleoides Nyl.

These differences in morphology are certainly linked to the characteristics of the substrate and in particular to the ease with which the fungal prothallus can extend across the smooth surface. I have good examples of Rinodina aspersa behaving like this too

Wild guess here as no experience with this species, but did you rule out Rinodina oleae?

Insects are scarce in January, even here in near subtropical South #Georgia, so most of January's #Macro was of #plants, #fungi and #lichens. More details on the subject matter in the #AltText.

Thanks, Peter. If your lichen were in Britain, I'd conclude R oleae. R gennarii is given as synonym of R oleae in @britishlichensociety.org.uk taxon dictionary (see image). ITALIC recognises potential synonymy, but still separates species. Separation seems mainly by substrate… 1/2

Rinodina robaris, on wayside Ash, Fraxinus excelsior, on the 1066 path, passing through Ashburnham deer park, Sussex yesterday. Quite frequent in South, but has a restricted southerly range. An "International Responsibility" species, i.e., souhthern UK has most of the European population #lichenGBT

Including @aspenecology.com. Looking at your photos there seem to be some on a more reddish colour rock? I've often seen yellower Xanthoria calcicola, usually but not always coastal. As to the ?Rinodina - spore examination is needed but nutrient-enrichment and run-off can affect the substrate PH.

Thanks, Peter. Which Rinodina species do you suspect? Not all contain atranorin, which reacts K+ yellow and K/UV(dry)+ bright yellow. (Latter test is more sensitive for atranorin, so useful to for corroboration.) Some contain no lichen substances, so you might or might not expect any K-reaction.
