Squid Exhibit Unprecedented Genetic Flexibility Through RNA Editing, Study Reveals
A groundbreaking study published in the journal Cell reveals that cephalopods, particularly squids, possess an extraordinary ability to alter genetic expression through RNA editing, a process that allows them to modify proteins without changing their DNA. Researchers from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) examined the proteome of the longfin inshore squid (Doryteuthis pealeii), identifying nearly 8,000 RNA editing sites across over 2,000 proteins in the squid's optic lobe and gills. The study found that these edits significantly impact protein activity, stability, localization, and interactions, with effects extending to organelle health, particularly in mitochondria. Unlike humans and other animals that undergo limited RNA editing, cephalopods exhibit a level of genetic flexibility that is unmatched in the animal kingdom. The research highlights that these edits occur in protein-coding sequences rather than non-coding 'junk' DNA, allowing for the creation of novel protein sequences. The team identified 5,000 short proteins not previously documented in the reference squid proteome or standard databases. Additionally, the editing process alters where proteins are located within cells, moving them toward the nucleus, and affects systems like creatine for energy bursts. The theoretical potential for protein variants is staggering, with estimates reaching 10^248, far exceeding the number of atoms in the universe. This genetic flexibility may explain the complex nervous systems and environmental adaptability observed in cephalopods. The study underscores that while the potential is immense, the actual extent of these edits in living organisms remains to be fully understood. The findings, published in Cell, offer new insights into the biological mechanisms that make cephalopods so uniquely adapted to their environments.
