After learning of their existence from His Dark Materials, my 11 yr-old daughter asked for a Crookes Radiometer for Xmas. I now regret every moment in which I didn’t have one in the house.

A special possession is the radiometer that my grandfather had in his study….

It is so old it barely works except in the strongest of light…but it was his and he encouraged my love of science.

Hi! I’m ARIEL, an L-band microwave radiometer 📡, and this is my little buddy Sebastian (the pulka 🛷). Together, we traveled across 3 Arctic ice stations ❄️ to uncover the invisible (aka microwave) secrets of ever-changing summer sea ice and its thickness on the @awi.de CONTRASTS #expedition 🧊.

i took the plasma globe off of this plasma globe and put a crookes radiometer instead

now it glows and goes spinny when i turn it on 😊

Have a Crookes radiometer in my office that wasn't spinning as well as it used to and I thought maybe the partial vacuum had been lost -- then I cleaned the surface and realized that the dust on the surface had scattered enough sunlight to keep it from working.

Countdown to Antarctic Fieldwork Day 16: #Drones The team's work this season will be using drone-borne reflectance sensors and a microwave radiometer to measure soil moisture in the cold desert. Drones take us higher & faster than walking and carry sensors that could not be used from the ground 🥼❄️⚒️🧪

If you don’t know what a Crookes radiometer is, I have an old post on it: skullsinthestars.com/2019/04/09/c...
Crookes and the puzzle of his radiometer
This blog post is based on some early experimental writing that was done for my Falling Felines and Fundamental Physics book that was cut from the final draft! As you will see, it was much too long…

The orbiter would carry 11 scientific instruments, including:
🔹 Magnetometers
🔹 Dust & particle analyzers
🔹 IR, UV, terahertz spectrometers
🔹 Visible camera
🔹 Microwave radiometer
Plus: autonomous navigation, maybe X-ray pulsar timing.

Physicist Robert H. Dicke was born #OTD in 1916. He invented the lock-in amplifier and the microwave radiometer, performed delicate tests of general relativity, predicted the Cosmic Microwave Background, and probably coined the term "black hole" as it is used in astrophysics. 🧪 ⚛️ 🔭
