your nas is better than mine. I have a minipc that runs jellyfin and has a samba server connected to a raidz with three hard drives in usb enclosures connected to a powered hub and everything is plugged into a power strip dedicated to the nas. but it works great lmao

raidz + checksums doing their job: scrub validates the survivors while resilver rebuilds the wiped vdev. Attacker had host access, so rotate keys and push snapshots to an immutable/offline target - the next wipe shouldn't take your recovery points with it.

ZFS uses SHA-256 checksums end to end and battle-tested RAIDZ, but demands RAM a single-disk laptop should not pay. Btrfs ties into the kernel and rolls back from snapshots for free. The 1 verdict: ZFS for NAS, Btrfs for desktops. Which filesystem guards your data?

5x 6TB drives in a RAIDZ-1 configuration. I'm adding the 4th to the array right now, the 5th will be added...uh, tomorrow, I guess. lol

Lol or I could be very much an idiot in the moment, and that RAIDz levels are similar to RAID0/1/5/6/10 levels.

I swear. Sometimes. My brain is.... Huxkin dumm.

Broadcomだと動かなかったインテルマザーが動いたで…^^;

Nooooooo lol

Not that you asked but I hope you can find a buddy who could give you some loaners to back up all that, then put them into something with a little parity!

Okay can you spill on what kind of volumes these are? Is it RAIDz or something similar? My setup is just this giant kludge with cobbled together old hardware I don't want to pitch lol

I could definetly see this being a gmod gamemode. We already have raidz which is also a multiplayer rpg with a crafting tree (as far as im aware)

Kicking myself for not buying like 5 28 TB hdds when they were $300 bucks a pop. Stuck with a 8 TB mirror setup instead of proper raidz because of poor choices

plus everyone hates raidz/raid5 because i guess the universe generally likes to wait for a nicely degraded array to kill a second drive. so idk. idk!!

I had a few cabinets of 1tb drives once when they were new. I was testing striped, mirrored, and raidz. the sound of all the drives lighting up for benchmarks was cool af. I'd run them late at night in the dark so I could watch das blinkenlighten and literally tune the cluster. maybe a synth patch 🤔

chat, riddle me this
4x 8 TB HDD drives
theoretically i can make backups to my object strorage, especially since on Upcloud i have to pay only for storage, no I/O or traffic fees, and Proxmox Backup Server supports object strorage
RAID5 (RAIDZ-1 more specifically), RAID6 (RAIDZ-2) or RAID10?

are you booting raidz?

like i always run zfs for disk arrays, just not boot disks

fwiw opensuse also defaults to btrfs. one of the first distros to make the switch, if i remember correctly.

context: I'm re-doing my zpool, so I backed up important data to temp-pool and marked a drive in my normal pool as faulty. created single drive pool temp-pool-2 where I will temporarily transfer all the data. Then re-create the raidz1 with 2 disks and then do raidz expansion to go back to 3 disks

Anyway, I got the system running and assembled the raidz pool with the two new drives + an offline'd device a couple days ago, so I could fill it with the, like, 12.3 TB of data from the old drive. Now that the copy has finished, the cooling is finalized, and I've physically housed the machine […]

Although if you're going to set up your own be prepared to learn exciting new words to drop into everyday conversations, such as "array", "RAIDZ", "rsync", "pool" and "hotswappable"

cool!

You should look into the ZFS filesystem and RAID for more efficient storage. I had a 5x 8TB RAIDZ-1 array which gives me 32TB of storage with one disk of redundancy in case of drive failure.

It’s some cool stuff :)

Have fun!
