Charities represent government policy failure.

Plibersek's insulting tokenism represents cruel hypocrisy.
Her government's welfare system is killing people.

Poverty kills.

But it's entirely preventable.

Your regular reminder that #poverty, #homelessness and food insecurity are failures of government policy.

The Albanese govt has made the choice to not #RaiseTheRate, and to keep one in six kids in poverty. #AntiPovertyWeek #EndChildPoverty #inequality #auspol
"Happy" #AntiPovertyWeek for 2026

There'll be events, some run for and buy poor people, some just to talk about us. I'll share them and the articles but let's do something for us:

It’s Anti-Poverty Week this week, and I stood with colleagues and community advocates to remind the Gov that while 3.7 million Australians live in poverty, including one in seven adults and one in six children, the Gov’s priorities are clearly out of whack #auspol #raisetherate

"Albanese took the credit...telling business leaders that he intervened after a text message from ACCI boss Andrew McKellar"

In #AntiPovertyWeek, if only any of the one in seven struggling households could text the PM and get similar quick action to #RaiseTheRate. #inequality #auspol

More money for food banks and financial counselling will not magically make people be able to afford to live.

RAISE THE RATE of welfare payments ABOVE the poverty line so people can afford to buy their own groceries not pay the same or more for items at a shiny "Foodbank"TM associate
Yes, 20% of suicide deaths are people on JobSeeker. Yes, 60% of working age adults who die are on a Centrelink payment.

So what did Tanya Plibersek do in Anti-Poverty Week? Give $5 million to charities.

I call on the Australian government to #RaiseTheRate of all support payments to a living wage. This would be the single most effective way to lift the productivity, quality of life, and well-being of the whole country. #CommitToALivingWage

Nobody left behind really does mean if anthony conman thinks you’re no one, he’s fucking leaving you behind, so he can dine with the elite at $10,000 a plate dinners while you cannot afford food.

We need change

What Jim R said. 👇

One in six kids live in poverty,
people experiencing poverty are more likelty to die early, and
this could easily be fixed.

But in #AntiPovertyWeek, the govt won't #RaiseTheRate because the political & media class prefers to obsess about tax loopholes for the wealthy. #auspol
The reason why it's controversial when it won't matter at all to normal people, is because media proprietors and politicians, and their friends and donors, are wealthy, and do use trusts to pay less tax than ordinary people.
www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...
Tax changes to discretionary trusts are likely – what is happening and why are some Australians upset?
Most Australians don’t use trusts, but the government’s planned changes to the tax status of them has proven controversial

"AntiPoverty week should not be about presenting welfare recipients as pitiful objects. It should be a time for politicians to be scrutinised for choices that kill people through poverty, residualised public housing and violating unemployed people’s agency by forcing them into compulsory activities"
Plibersek’s charity funding in Anti-Poverty Week is an insult to poor people
The government has announced $5 million in charity funding while welfare recipients make up more than a third of suicide deaths, and are up to 10x more likely to die than people not on income support.
