The Aus Gov has the means to tackle poverty. They can fix welfare payments, target full employment and better fund social housing. These steps would go a long way to reducing poverty for the 3.7 million living below the poverty line. It’s all about priorities. #antipovertyweek

“They won’t mention the root of the problem: what’s destroying lives is systemic violence perpetrated by the government against people in poverty through the neoliberal social security system that targets and rations specific groups.”

#Raisetherate
"The violence against people in poverty is everywhere; it is constant, it is systemic and crafting a pitiful image of destitution to mark Anti-Poverty Week is not going to save anyone’s life."

What Jim R said. 👇

One in six kids live in poverty,
people experiencing poverty are more likelty to die early, and
this could easily be fixed.

But in #AntiPovertyWeek, the govt won't #RaiseTheRate because the political & media class prefers to obsess about tax loopholes for the wealthy. #auspol
The reason why it's controversial when it won't matter at all to normal people, is because media proprietors and politicians, and their friends and donors, are wealthy, and do use trusts to pay less tax than ordinary people.

Tax changes to discretionary trusts are likely – what is happening and why are some Australians upset?
Most Australians don’t use trusts, but the government’s planned changes to the tax status of them has proven controversial

I call on the Australian government to #RaiseTheRate of all support payments to a living wage. This would be the single most effective way to lift the productivity, quality of life, and well-being of the whole country. #CommitToALivingWage

Anyway, that's the so called "one size fits all" unemployment system that we currently have in place.

I really did think it was incredible when Rishworth kept using that phrase during the NPC.

But if anyone wants to correct (or add to) anything, go ahead.

Invest in public school build repairs, upgrades.
How could you use the $17 billion raised (annually!) from a 25% gas export tax?

Catelyn Richards from the nurses and midwives union says healthcare could be greatly improved.

Dr Terri Macdonald from the NTEU says universities could be fee-free.

Nobody left behind really does mean if anthony conman thinks you’re no one, he’s fucking leaving you behind, so he can dine with the elite at $10,000 a plate dinners while you cannot afford food.

We need change

If I had surplus food I'd give to charity but I don't...also I know rich pensioners who access food banks, not because they need to, but because they can (pension card) it's a failure of government that a country this rich cannot #raisetherate or #taxthegas means testing might be a good idea also.

More money for food banks and financial counselling will not magically make people be able to afford to live.

RAISE THE RATE of welfare payments ABOVE the poverty line so people can afford to buy their own groceries not pay the same or more for items at a shiny "Foodbank"TM associate
Yes, 20% of suicide deaths are people on JobSeeker. Yes, 60% of working age adults who die are on a Centrelink payment.

So what did Tanya Plibersek do in Anti-Poverty Week? Give $5 million to charities.

Why not #raisetherate as well?

Oh yeah. The LABOR government did the numbers.

But they do look so very progressive.

Charities and non-profits to receive $630 million to help cover higher wages in female-dominated sectors
The Federal government will provide $630 million to organisations in female-dominated sectors like health, disability and community services to implement wage rises for their workers. This follows the Fair Work Commission’s ruling that five female-dominated industry awards would include wage rises, after it found this work had been historically undervalued because of gender-based assumptions. The funding will go to over 128,000 organisations to support award-related wage rises for 460,000 health, disability and community services workers. Most of these workers are women. The $630 million is designed to be spread over four years to help charities and non-profits meet the higher wages without cutting services. “We cannot close the gender pay gap without confronting and addressing the historic undervaluation of work performed predominantly by women,” Minister for Women Katy Gallagher said. “This move is also a clear signal that this workforce and the support they provide our community is important and valued.” It comes after the federal government dedicated another $3.6 billion to top up the wages of early childhood education and care workers in June. This new funding announced on Tuesday will also go to government-funded organisations that employ workers in other sectors affected by the award changes, like legal assistance workers, housing workers, youth workers, community development workers and First Nation community service workers. “Behind every community service is a dedicated worker helping someone through one of the hardest moments of their life,” Social Services Minister Tanya Plibersek said. “Whether it’s supporting a woman escaping violence, helping a family facing homelessness, or making sure someone has a warm meal and somewhere to turn, these workers change lives every day.” Employment Minister Amanda Rishworth said funding these pay rises was what closing the gender pay gap looked like in practice. “This Fair Work Commission decision is helping to address decades of gender-based undervaluation and deliver better wages for workers in health, disability and community services,” she said.
