Now as the 15:30 Ravenshoe to Cairns train, railcar 2018 climbs a grade just out of Ravenshoe, and soon enough we arrive at Tumoulin. The Ravenshoe Tourist Railway has an objective to restore the Ravenshoe to Tumoulin section as a steam tourist railway.

We stopped at Mareeba just long enough for me to duck out and get this shot of 2018 and the 15:30 Ravenshoe to Cairns train. Whilst parts of this line are still used, it’s no longer possible to travel all the way between Ravenshoe and Cairns by train.

Today's historic pic: Exactly 39 years ago today, Queensland Rail railmotors 2005 and 2018 prepare to run the afternoon train to Cairns from Ravenshoe, Qld, July 28 1986. This railmotor left Cairns at 9:30am Mondays to Fridays, and left Ravenshoe at 3:30pm before arriving back in Cairns at 8:23pm.
A streamlined silver liveried two car diesel railcar set sits at a low level platform at a passenger platform with narrow gauge tracks in the yard in the foreground. The station, which sits on the low level platform, has a red peaked roof with deep awnings on all sides. The platform and station yard appear neatly tended with gardens, seats and a luggage trolley.

The terminus at Ravenshoe (pronounced Ravens-hoe, not Raven-shoe). After a short layover, we departed on the return to Cairns by running beyond the station to the terminus, reversing into the triangle, then heading straight out to the main line from there.

Today's historic pic: The interior of the signal box at Kuranda, Qld, July 26, 1986. Kuranda is 34km from Cairns on QR's 1067mm gauge Kuranda Scenic Railway. In 1986, as well as tourist trains from Cairns, Kuranda then still saw regular goods trains and railcars to Mareeba and Ravenshoe.
Looking into a signal cabin from the outside, we see a 37 lever McKenzie & Holland manual lever frame. Levers are painted red, black, blue and white to distinguish their function controlling signals, track points, point locks and as unused respectively. Four levers, one red, one blue and two black, are thrown and the remainder are standing upright. The walls at right and on the far end are filled with windows, and the adjacent building is just visible through the windows at the end. A track and signal diagram hangs high on the wall above the windows in front of the lever frame.

When we got to Kuranda, rather than exploring that town like a real person, I stayed at the station and boarded the following train, the 09:30 Cairns to Ravenshoe, run that day by 2000 class car no 2018. Here we are near Bilwon, about 25km west of Kuranda.

Today's historic pic: The site of what was then Australia's northernmost passenger #railway stopping place, Fairyland, Qld, July 26 1986. Fairyland was a stopping place about 3.5km north west of Kuranda on Queensland Rail's narrow gauge line to Mareeba, Ravenshoe and Forsayth.

I have a curious little home made cookbook that was actually an anti Labor thing made in Ravenshoe when they were stopping the rainforest being cut down in the 80s.
It has Flo's recipe in it. 😆
