#Reviewertip of the day!

When you’re unsure whether a review comment is major or minor, ask: would fixing this change how I judge the study?

If it affects validity, interpretation, or a central claim, it’s likely major. If it mainly improves clarity, it’s probably minor.

#ReviewerTip: Compare the abstract with the results before you finish your review.

Check whether the main claims match the primary outcomes, effect sizes, limitations, and conclusion. Overstatement often becomes much easier to spot when you read those sections side by side.

#ReviewerTip: Compare the abstract and conclusion with the results.

If the language becomes more certain than the evidence allows, point out exactly where the interpretation goes too far.

Save this for your next review.

#ReviewerTip: If an image raises a concern, focus on what can be observed.

Describe the pattern, duplication, inconsistency, or missing information, explain why it matters, and avoid speculating about intent. Investigation belongs with the editor.

#ReviewerTip: Before questioning authorship, start with the evidence available.

Check contribution statements, disclosures, approvals, and inconsistencies. If information is missing, describe exactly what is unclear rather than speculating about intent.

#ReviewerTip: A manuscript can read beautifully and still have problems with methods, evidence, or interpretation.

Polish helps with readability, but it should not influence how strongly the research itself is judged.

The reviewer’s job is not to demand perfect data. It is to check whether the uncertainty has been handled honestly.

What makes you most cautious when you see missing data in a manuscript?

#ReviewerTip: If something in a manuscript seems unusual, describe what you observed and why it affects your assessment.

Avoid turning uncertainty into an allegation. Flag the concern clearly and let the evidence guide the next step.

#ReviewerTip: You do not have to resolve every concern in a manuscript yourself.

If something falls outside your expertise, explain what you noticed, why it may matter, and what kind of specialist input could help the editor assess it properly.
