Missing data is not just about how many observations were lost.

The bigger question is whether what is missing could change the validity or interpretation of the findings.

Start by checking the amount and pattern.

Reviewing outside your exact expertise does not automatically mean declining.

You may still be well placed to assess parts of the manuscript, as long as you are clear about what you can and cannot judge confidently.

Reviewers do not need to rewrite the manuscript to make a review useful.

Focus on what needs attention, why it matters, and what the authors should reconsider or clarify. Detailed rewriting can blur the line between evaluation and authorship.

Not every review comment deserves the same weight.

Put issues affecting validity and central claims first, then move to interpretation, transparency, and presentation. A clear order helps authors and editors see what matters most.

A faster review is only useful if it is still careful enough to support a sound editorial decision.

Our latest article explores how prioritization, structured reading, and selective use of technology can make reviewing more efficient without sacrificing quality. buff.ly/AfSqBay

#ReviewerTip: Compare the abstract and conclusion with the results.

If the language becomes more certain than the evidence allows, point out exactly where the interpretation goes too far.

A limitation is not just something to list at the end of a manuscript.

Ask whether it changes confidence in the findings, how the results should be interpreted, or how broadly they can be applied, and whether the claims reflect that.

A good #peerreviewer does not need to have every answer.

If you identify an important issue that falls outside your expertise, explain the concern clearly and let the editor know what kind of specialist input may be needed.

A good review doesn't need to comment on everything.

When time is limited, the better question is which issues could actually change the assessment of the manuscript. Prioritizing those first can make the review more focused without making it less rigorous.

Reviewing faster does not have to mean reviewing less carefully.

A good place to start is by identifying the issues that could genuinely affect the manuscript’s validity, interpretation, or recommendation.

A manuscript can read beautifully and still have problems with methods, evidence, or interpretation.

Polish helps with readability, but it should not influence how strongly the research itself is judged.

Mixed-methods research is not just two methods in one paper.

When reviewing it, you need to assess the qualitative and quantitative parts, but also whether they genuinely connect.

The same goes for reporting and consistency.

Technology can flag something worth a closer look, but it cannot replace the reviewer’s judgment on methods, interpretation, or whether the conclusions are justified.

Sometimes a manuscript raises an issue that matters, but sits outside your expertise.

If it could affect the decision, tell the editor what you noticed, why it matters, and what specialist knowledge would help assess it.

Sensitivity analysis is useful when it shows whether the result still holds under reasonable alternative assumptions or analytical choices.

When reviewing, ask whether the authors tested the alternatives that could genuinely change the conclusion.

A useful final check is simple: if the design cannot establish causation, the language should not imply that it can.

What causal wording tends to make you look twice when reviewing a manuscript?

“The sample is small” comment leaves the author guessing.

Is the sample too small to detect a meaningful effect? Too narrow to represent the wider population? Or too limited to support the conclusion?

Explain the consequence, not just the concern. #PeerReviewTips #AcademicSkills

What makes difficult reviewer feedback hardest to frame?

Is it that the concern is complex, the wording feels too direct, or you’re unsure what recommendation fits?

Curious to hear what usually slows you down.

When you evaluate someone else’s methodology and data, you start noticing gaps in your own work.

Peer review changes how you read your own work. You begin to see it critically like a reviewer would.
