#Reviewers
The NYT cutting loose one of their most talented book reviewers over a *repost* that critiqued an article from another section of the paper is absurd and a wildly bad judgement call. Shameful and infuriating behavior.
BREAKING: The New York Times has terminated their contract with romance columnist Olivia Waite after she reposted @markjacob.bsky.social 's repost of @marisakabas.bsky.social criticism of the Times’ coverage of new rape allegations about Trump.

That is a sentence I didn’t think I’d type today.

It's complicated by the journals who have no incentive to remove bad reviewers from the pool.
November 2, 2026 at 6:07 AM
This is terrible and should be explicitly against the policy of every peer reviewed journal. Reviewers can’t be feeding people’s unpublished work to theft machines! Come on now!
And yes, Im really angry after a peer reviewer likely fed my unpublished manuscript into an LLM to generate a review and didn't disclose it to the press. Dishonest and unethical behavior is what gAI encourages and breeds.

So they're even worse than edgy 90's reviewers, nice

Postdoc and I decided we have all the data we need for a manuscript. Reviewers may think otherwise, but we are going to go for it!

Jesus Christ why were reviewers like this? 😬

Finding out who your reviewers are feels quite boring

I think a lot of reviewers would unironically want this

Perhaps you should restrict your predictions of revolutions to your own fields. Because all I see in my field so far: students using gAI to cheat on a catastrophic scale; AI destroying trust between faculty and students; and reviewers feeding unpub work
into LLMs out of sheer laziness.
Two things are true:

1. Claims about AI capabilities are overblown
2. AI has completely revolutionized software development, and will do the same to many other fields

I'm a software developer by trade. I'm going to attempt to explain what this revolution feels like "from the inside".

Academic progress is made by people telling you your work is no good. (I’m not talking about you, peer reviewers.)

but i think we all know and have known for a very long time that even the reviewers who manage to beat a game in time for embargo don't always end up agreeing with their own opinion that they crammed in a fugue state. the best critical work happens in the weeks & months following that wild-ass rush.

A right-wing dork tried to attack my book but instead provided these wonderful blurbs:

"[I]t hit the Times bestseller list immediately upon release and has been hailed as 'stunning,' 'transfixing,' and much more by reviewers."

"I haven’t seen a single negative review."

It wasn't always this bad. Of course you had youtube reviewers back in the day churning out horrible criticism but at least their was a modicum of effort you had to put in to make a video, which naturally limited the amount.

Now EVERY take immediately gets blasted into your feed nonstop.

Journal editors in political science: what say you? ORCID-based cap of only 3 paper submissions per year? Higher quality work, less demand on editors & reviewers, a way to cut down on AI slop? @benansell.bsky.social @laynamosley.bsky.social @laiabalcells.bsky.social @manuelamoschella.bsky.social
Just had a similar conversation with JEPP’s Berthold Rittberger. We must get serious about the attentional externalities of submissions. I’d favor an ORCID-based cap of three submissions per year, which would force fewer and better papers. If top-50 journal editors got on board, it could happen :)

Your reviewers volunteered their time for an intellectual conversation. Sending their comments through a machine and returning the output is not quite holding up your end.
