Ceanothus (#Rhamnaceae) is divided into 2 subgenera based (in part) on stipules! Subgen. Cerastes (=“horned”) has persistent, corky stipules, a pair with each leaf. Subg. Ceanothus has thin, deciduous stipules. This is C. crassifolius with those fantastic horns! 📷: BJ Stacey CCBYNC4 #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Tiny intricate stars under the forest of Jarrah trees, #Trymalium ledifolium flowering all over, this species is within the #Rhamnaceae family, found all around the southwest with 3 varieties! Super cute but also tiny flowers are very difficult to capture expecially if a breeze blows through!

When I did my PhD at Cal Bot Gard, #Ceanothus (#Rhamnaceae) stole my heart. They're amazing chaparral shrubs, especially the blue-flowered species. #Cryptandra tomentosa! This plant is in the #Rhamnaceae family, with its genus name referring to its anthers being hidden by hood-shaped petals. Unfortunetly, the specimen I had to photograph weren’t very fresh so this is a species I’ll need to come back to in the future.

Ceanothus americanus, also known as New Jersey Tea, is part of the Rhamnaceae. This specimen was collected by Frosty Levy and Sollie Walker on June 22nd, 2013. It was located on Scioto Road in Unicoi County, Tennessee.
