Day 23 of #InsectAdvent

As the angels spread their wings, so do the flies. Rhamphomyia marginata (Empididae) are found across Europe & unusually for animals, it is the females that form the flirty swarms. Maybe not such angelic behaviour 😉

Since it's already the end of #FlyWeek (!) I though I would share this painting I did of Rhamphomyia longicauda dance flies (inspired by Matisse's Dance (I), of course) for Dr. Rosalind Murray's #LaurierBiology departmental seminar back in 2022! #Diptera #SciArt

Tonight's fly genitalia for your delectation, and it's a particularly wacky one tonight. This looks like Rhamphomyia maculipennis, from Elmley back in May. Looks like a fairly localised thing (although no official conservation status).

The very hairy and infrequently recorded montane #Empididae Rhamphomyia albosegmentata from Ben Lawers last month. Interestingly it's congener R. morio which was abundant in the same place when I collected in June a few years back was completely absent this July

#Empididae Rhamphomyia morio, male, Ben Lawers, 26∙vi∙21. Another northern species that is infrequently recorded in the UK. #Diptera

Fly friend is family Empididae, and genus Rhamphomyia or Empis - I'd guess the former but can't quite see the wing venation clearly enough

Today's fun fact: dance flies mate via what can only be described as a giant flying orgy

Well, scientists describe it a bit differently: sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

But for those who find science boring, watch some dance fly porn here: youtu.be/f-G0YVsOjS4?...

Of course, if you have a moth party it will be crashed by insects from other orders. I'm pretty sure the beetle is Stenolophus ochropezus, but IDs for the others are wild guesses: Macrocentrus sp., Rhamphomyia sp., and Pilaria tenuipes. Thanks for any help.

@xylota Any chance you could help me identify this fly? I'm guessing at even genus. Arrived at blacklight in Media, Pennsylvania, USA. https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/129011705
