So as pointless speculation goes, let's all remember that Lovecraft lived 1890-1937. That was back when "computer" was a job description for human beings. Mechanical tabulation was a thing, but electronic tabulation was not. Robots had been theorized and entered the popular lexicon.

I don't mean that just in terms of gross-out horror. If Gordon wanted to do a Lovecraft or Poe homage, he was going to go all-out. If his movie was set in space or amid some fighting robots or in a castle with a "freak," audiences were gonna get the goods. An ultimate "bang for your buck" director.

Long & I talked much about the possibilities of hack writing—he has an idea that some of the advertised plot-mixing devices (graphs, plot robots,8 &c) would help him to ‘click’, & intends to send for something of the sort. That kid’s eternal optimism after 9 years of striving is something to admire! But actually—these plot things might help a certain type of person . . . mine, for example. With a plot doped out in advance, a hack construction job would automatically become a piece of revision or ghost-writing.

HOWEVER, if you love super robots and lovecraft, then you definitely should check it out, since its peaks are SUPER HYPE

One thing that I find really fascinating that Lovecraft never used robots. All his aliens are explicitly organic life (even if weird) and tech is just tech.

And I wonder if that is part of why it's now considered more fantasy than sci-fi, because a bunch of myth of progress stuff.
