Apart from anything else... you don't "pronounce letters". Letters represent speech sounds – speech is always primary. And it changes. Language changes. That's normal, and natural, and part of what makes language fun!

OK... I'm not in the habit of sharing articles from this publication, but stone me... this is an absolute classic of the genre. When we say that complaints about language are usually complaints about language users, this is the kind of article we're talking about.

Celebrities can't speak properly
The habitual dropping of the ‘t’-sound is an affectation, even if a subconscious one.

A good breakdown of where and why AI translation is problematic, from a fellow translator. 'Good enough' is often NOT be enough.

AI translation sounds convincing, but it can be riddled with hidden errors
For those using generative AI to translate, it’s important to keep these risks in mind.

I've been approached about a potential long-term collaboration by a Slovak speaker, editing texts written in English.

For the first time I've had to state that I'm only interested if the texts are human authored & not AI-generated. We'll see what the response is...

Korean Language Picks Up in Japan
The rise of Korean terms in Japanese is a striking reversal from colonial times and a sign of the global appeal of South Korean culture.

Oldest Recording of Louisiana’s Vanishing Creole Language Is Published
The rediscovery of a forgotten recording from 1935 sheds light on a language rooted in the state’s history of slavery and French colonialism.

Another example of how the rollout of generative AI in government is failing.

Canada’s AI translation tool GCtraduction has been making numerous errors in its first six months, particularly in English to French translations.

I didn't make it to the @littranslate.bsky.social conference last month, but my mentee Riya Parikh was there. She read from her translations, was on a panel on translating children's books-& even managed to make sure I was there when it was time for the mentor/mentee photographs.🥰🥰
