Got to help the new PhD student with their first crystals yesterday, although I did have to point out they probably won't see diffraction quite like this every time they grow crystals! #chemsky

Another month or so and our new @rigakuoxfordxrd.bsky.social SCXRD would have a structure in minutes

Super excited to share the first fluoflavine radical-bridged single-molecule magnets 🧲🥳😎! The new lanthanide molecules feature open magnetic hysteresis loops 🧲🎉 ! The study includes SCXRD, SQUID, HF-EPR and DFT data! Published in JACS!

Materials

I selected 100 articles from Physical sciences section that somehow contain diffraction, mainly PXRD, but a bit of SCXRD. Articles from 28/11/2024 to 07/01/2025.

Methods

Eyes, not fancy-pancy AI or any scripts. A bit of a Excel and Paint.NET.

Our work examining SnxTaSe2 is out in @jacs.acspublications.org! From a single intercalated TMD growth composition, we find unexpected structural diversity that is not captured by common characterization techniques. #chemsky 🧪 pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/...

Hah, we were talking about it today with our SCXRD technician, in his words "we don't like dichloromethane, please students don't use dichloromethane"

This would not have been possible without the hard work from Ayu, with amazing support from Edgar! Fabian Dankert did magic with the SCXRD data, Jonas Surkau carried out the IR/RAMAN studies and Andrey chipped in some CV-tricks. Great team effort! Congrats to everyone! #31P #phosphorus #ProudPI

Are these crystals big enough for neutron diffraction? :)

Really happy to have this one out! 😁In this paper, we show that metal complexes can be integrated into into B←N frameworks. We linked trinuclear Au₃(pyrazolate)₃ complexes with boronate esters and obtained highly crystalline (SCXRD!), adaptable 1D and 2D polymers. Have a look! 👀

Summary of SCXRD week

Out of 10 measured structures:
- 6 unexpected
- 2 expected, but just because few weeks ago related structures were unexpected
- 2 expected (appeared on Friday afternoon)

Joining #chemsky, I'll revisit some previous research, while I wait for review on the latest.

In 2023, we reported scXRD of N-O OA of Ni(0) to isoxazoles (acs.organomet.2c00533), illustrating a long-proposed mode of catalyst poisoning. Contrary to the literature, we did not observe this for Pd(0).

I really love it when a fresh batch of scXRD structures drops from our collaborators at @uniofjyvaskyla.bsky.social! N–Cl bonds have become our group's workhorse and the structs allow finding really neat trends, here's a snippet from our 2025 paper. #chemchat #chemsky

Pedro’s latest preprint is posted! He explains how to grow crystals of RE-UiO-66 suitable for standard SCXRD (not an easy task). With co-authors Chris Copeman, Micaela Richezzi, Justin Sardilli (undergrad) and Hatem Titi 💎

I did an analysis of a crystals that formed on the leaves of touch-me-not few year ago. Not nothing interesting, just sugar. But crystals were good enough for SCXRD.
