#SESRO
October 5, 2026 at 6:11 AM
Parish councils and local representatives are working together to launch an independent parish-wide survey on the proposed White Horse Reservoir (SESRO), giving residents, businesses and communities an opportunity to put their views and concerns formally on record.

This is also true of SESRO which is very obviously not going to be ready by the 2040s. They should have gone with a much smaller reservoir with fewer technical and environmental challenges.

Thames Water has been trying to build a new reservoir for years but planning red tape and nimbyism continually blocks it.

But anybody objecting to SESRO is a NIMBY and that is that, no more thoughts required.
September 14, 2026 at 9:37 PM
This is broadly true, but SESRO does have unique design features that make it more problematic than other planned reservoirs. The enormous size, combined with using embankments to contain the water, makes it much more challenging and risky than usual.

Thames Water SESRO water delivery rate = 271M litres per day; Thames Water pipe leakage rate = ~600 M litres per day. The issue is not a few retired NIMBYs, but TW's utterly catastrophic (and deserved) reputation.

btw this report from the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust is worth a read on how Thames Water have short cut (cheapskate bodging!) the plans for the reservoir and removing long term benefits to many + employment & financial gains to locals & good flooding mitigation. wbct.org.uk/south-east-r...

Thames Water have also dropped plans to relocate three existing solar farms on the land that will be used for the reservoir. They say they will continue to include floating solar panels on the reservoir itself. thames-sro.co.uk/projects/whi...

Oxfordshire County Council and local campaign groups are vigorously opposing the proposed South East Strategic Reservoir (SESRO) near Abingdon, demanding the project be scrapped.

As far as I’m aware, opposition has been primarily against Sesro and the Teddington recycling plant. Happy to discuss why opposition to those projects is well grounded.

The floodplain around the Shire is full. The cricket pitch and footie field on Andersey Island are flooded, as is the riverside meadow upstream from the Abingdon bridge, the field between Culham Cut and the river is full, as are the fields opposite Tesco Extra. I can't see how SESRO would help...

I think that's probably right but I fundamentally don't believe that SESRO will be built at all, I think Thames Water will go bust first and if it does get built it'll be 3-4 times over budget and late, whereas knocking up a smaller reservoir would help much quicker
January 27, 2026 at 9:09 AM
Is it more viable to build so many reservoirs and/or the Severn-Thames link? Or will it just lead to more delays and time than waiting for SESRO to fill?
January 27, 2026 at 8:53 AM
Severn-Thames plus two normal reservoirs OR 3-4 normal reservoirs would also almost certainly be cheaper and way more resilient (SESRO will take years to fill and maintenance will be really difficult, smaller reservoirs adding up to the same volume would come online sooner + be easier to maintain)
January 27, 2026 at 8:46 AM
It's not, if anything it's the other way round and SESRO is the overcomplicated option, before you get to 'do you trust Thames Water to do this'.
January 27, 2026 at 8:44 AM
You’re often right in general but SESRO is a stupid example, a gigantic white elephant that exists solely to pad Thames Water’s balance sheet. Just build two smaller, still very large reservoirs and the Severn-Thames Transfer.
