I really wish lay people understood that there is nothing intrinsically faster in at-grade, on-street rail compared to buses. If anything, it has a number of constraints that can make it potentially slower. It's the quality of priority that determines its performance, not the rail.

Lurie is cutting transit service and replacing it with Waymo. letting rich people clog up the street with robotaxis that stall all the time while regular people in buses get stuck behind is terrible policy and undoes the whole point of car-free Market. absolutely catastrophic

My question is not whether the SFMTA Embarcadero streetcar to Caltrain has transit signal priority. Anyone who watches it can see that it obviously does not. My question is why does the SFMTA claim that it has signal priority?

When the SFMTA workers showed up they wanted to move the car and Waymo folks said no because "You aren't law enforcement."
Anyway, that's how student was in a train accident and decided they'd rather walk across SF from now on than ever trust Waymo again.

SFMTA approved transit-only red lanes on Ocean Ave in February 2024 - nearly two years ago - after a year of outreach. Now merchants along the Ocean corridor are trying to kill the project, less than a month before the paint was set to be applied.

I'm in the Marina right now (a Sunday) and there is functionally 100% parking occupancy within several blocks of where we're eating.
There is *no way* that SFMTA would lose money by charging for parking today.

It all comes back to operating expenses. Operating agencies are always* hunting for ways to economize on them.
So, parking is free on Sundays for the same reason that transit often doesn’t run at all. Lower trip volumes provide a rationale for curbing opex.
