What's happening in Dubai bolsters the argument taxes should be based on people's nationality, not just their country of residence (ie the US model).

If Brits living abroad can expect to be airlifted out by virtue of being British, they should pay some tax towards that.

I once had an FT story entirely lifted by a tabloid - think it was the Express but my memory might fail me. George Parker half jokingly suggested I send an invoice, which I did on a lark.

Created a bit of a headache when they bloody paid up. Wasn't so much fun explaining to the managing editor...

Trump argues in FT interview that “people who are the beneficiaries" of the Strait of Hormuz should help keep it open

That's not a crazy point, until you remember why the Strait is closed in the first place. It wasn't Europe or Asia that did this.

there's an implicit accusation here—don't you realise you're just as bad as the nazi's trying to get people killed?

& just think about it for a minute, how preposterous that is as a moral claim

A lot of people left X for Bluesky because of the tone of the discourse there (I wasn't one of them, as it happens).

But do be aware that angry lefties aren't above personal insults.

If your answer is "oh but you said something I disagree with online", it might be worth rethinking a few things.

Important context:
bsky.app/profile/spig...
Just for context, this wasn't last night, this is hockey legend Hayley Wickenheiser after the 2002 Olympic women's hockey game. USA Hockey and the Canadian Hockey Association investigated the incident and said it was just a rumour but most Canadians had no trouble believing it.

I disagree with this one too. If you were interested in such a theme in 2006, what an ideal book to read again, right now, during a putative crisis of globalisation, to learn more about how assumptions change, and to potentially revise your understanding of the world.

bsky.app/profile/spig...
- There are vastly more interesting things to put on bookshelves than books (4)
btw you should probably get rid of a lot of books on those shelves. By all means keep the ones that are meaningful to you. But that 2006 book by Martin Wolf on the future of globalisation? Why are you keeping that??
