#SVGA
Finally got a little time on my 8088/V20 machine and it works! I had to slow the bus down to 8MHz: 11MHz & 10MHz wouldn't run even with up to 4 WS, but could run at 0WS @8MHz. BIOS writes were quite slow, noticable in DOS, but direct gfx were as fast as the ET4000 - amazing!

the SVGA graphics are waiting for you, please, come back to us

This reverse-engineered FPGA PC/104 board is my favorite target for the Graphics Gremlin SVGA+ core builds because it’s supposed to be a DeviceNet interface and it’s doing DVI through pins on the C/D connector that don’t touch the PC’s bus.

stock Doom max details:
ET4000 in 8-bit ISA mode: 19.21 FPS
Graphics Gremlin SVGA+: 19.48 FPS

It's a good core.

Our 1st family desktop was a 2nd-hand Win95 PC, 486 33 Mhz, 8 MB RAM, 8-bit SVGA (256 colours), Sound Blaster 16, 2x CD-ROM drive with a busted tray, forget how much HDD space (prob around 500 MB). Played Duke Nukem 3D at sub-1 FPS in big levels. Rise of the Triad not so bad, DOOM smooth.
What was your first computer growing up?

Physics were so much better in X-Wing c/f Wing Commander / Privateer (and is still crap in that "Freelancer" modern version), all lack inertia enforcing proper arc trajectories. Tie vs X-Wing had the SVGA graphics (what a leap!) but the universe was too empty, and the story
... X Wing all the way!!

...actually I'm not sure if WC is VGA or SVGA, come to think of it

There is a few EGA games that loses in the SVGA version

Yeah! 256-colour VGA is such a sweet spot for pixel art that has enough colour depth but still has that refined chunky feel that SVGA misses out on.

Hopefully it'll get there as a wider aesthetic. It took a while for others to be adopted past the NES one.

Graphics Gremlin SVGA+ core and PicoGraph got a mention on This Week in Retro. Thanks!

The Graphics Gremlin SVGA+ core is working on the Graphics Gremlin HDMI with every system I've tried it in. There are probably a lot more bugs out there, but I'm focused on the following:
- ZWS not asserting (this is halving write performance in some cases)
- ken's labyrinth freeze
- kukoo2 glitches

- The daily video game history fact -

Links 386 Pro (1992) set a new standard for realism in sports simulations with its photo-realistic SVGA graphics, advanced ball physics, and detailed course modeling. It influenced golf simulations for more than a decade.

Really?

I'm both excited and deeply worried that this was possible.

I used to use an IBM 3290 regularly, and it really was nice to look at, especially versus the SVGA CRTs of the era.

If you want to see a complete swath of PC game pixel art approaches, tune into this. We're talking Commodore wide pixels, EGA, VGA, SVGA, all the good stuff.

Took a lot of inspiration from this artwork for my new project, The Edutainment Vortex Diner. The name was also inspired by retro pals too!

I went to so many of those shows at the fairgrounds in Tampa.

I’m souping up a Dell 386 I bought because I realized I didn’t have any fancy ISA 386s, just MCA ones. (I’m still after an EISA one.) It’s a 33MHz board with L2 cache and onboard SVGA.

I mentioned on the fork but I'll release Graphics Gremlin SVGA+ this week - if you have a Graphics Gremlin HDMI, all you need to do is flash the new gateware.
September 13, 2026 at 6:01 PM
There are two projects I've been working on for a while, and it's probably confusing because they're both graphics cards.
- PicoGraph is alternative firmware for the PicoMEM2 that uses DisplayLink hardware for a framebuffer
- Graphics Gremlin SVGA+ is gateware for the existing Graphics Gremlin HDMI
