I taught my mom how to spot a Morris design ahead of our trip to England last year. We visited Hill Top Farm and Sambourne House, which both featured Morris wallpaper, but our favorite find was this piano in the Victoria & Albert Museum

Yesterday went to Leighton House and Sambourne House, two historic house museums in roughly the same neighborhood in Kensington, and I'm obsessed with the similarities and differences. 🧵

The sounds of Victorian London can now be heard in the richly preserved Sambourne House, where they’ve recently added a new soundscape to the usually silent rooms.

Sambourne House, on the other hand, is more realistic about the amount of clutter that would have existed in a late Victorian house, and the way their aesthetic sense would have clashed with ours.

There are scant few #MuseumBums at Sambourne House, but we spied this little terracotta chappy on the drawing room mantelpiece, with a bonus peach on the wallpaper to boot! 😁👍🏛️🍑

If you're going to SH, go to their sibling museum Leighton House after (there are millions of #MuseumBums there 😋)

OTD in 1881, Charles Darwin published his last book, on earthworms.

It reflected a long interest in animal minds: “One alternative alone is left, namely, that worms, although standing low in the scale of organization, possess some degree of intelligence.”

The highlight of the day was Sambourne House and especially the sound installation in the dining room created by Elizabeth Langfeld.

A friend recently visited London's Sambourne House - former home of illustrator, Linley Sambourne. Also the home of Cecil Vyse from A Room with a View (1985). Comparing my friend's photo with a film still, I noticed that the room's pictures & ornaments in 1985 are sitting in the same place today!

For #WorldBeeDay we have some 19th century parliamentary connections to bees. Depicted here by Punch as a bee, Sir John Lubbock, who created Bank Holidays, published Ants, Bees, and Wasps in 1882 (among other scientific works). There's more on him here: historyofparliament.com/2013/05/27/t...

I presume "his" is a misprint for "this," for the [Cecil] "Rhodes Colossus" cartoon is by Edward Linley Sambourne (1844-1910), whereas "Expansion!"—Uncle Sam astride the Americas—is by Louis Dalrymple.

Leighton had expensive hobbies, like collecting enough tiles or textiles to decorate whole rooms with them. Sambourne's equivalent was prints.
