We actually went to Mill Bay #Salcombe to look for sea horses in the Eelgrass (Zostera marina) but it was too deep & visibility not great. Did see a distant Ballan Wrasse (Labrus bergylta) as well as some Sand Smelt (Atherina presbyter) & lots Lesser Sand Lance (Ammodytes tobianus) #sandeels #fish

A shoal of sandeels at Elie, #Fife. These fish move in such tight unison that they act like one organism. They are a lynchpin of the marine ecosystem, being a source of nutritious food for so many other creatures

Bigger groups typically make more accurate decisions but are they more efficient? Daisy Cooper shows that bigger groups of sandeels make quicker decisions to forage and this advantage is especially evident under control but (maybe surprisingly?) not risky situations

Sunday evening at Bempton. A howling, cold Northerly was making it hard for the puffins to land so they were circling and making repeated attempts to get on the cliffs... making it easier to photograph them. #birds #ukbirds #ukwildlife #wildlife

Per the article, after sandeel fishing got banned 2 years ago, the ecosystem improved.

"Sandeels" aren't actually eels. Instead, they are a small, long fish that burrows in the muddy bottom of the sea.

Went to the fabulous Farne Islands last week. Puffins and Arctic Terns in incredible numbers as well as Guillemots, Eider ducks, grey seals, and all the rest. Puffins and terns obviously very busy feeding ravenous chicks. #birds #ukbirds #seabirds #wildlife

The sea conditions were so benign when snorkelling at Elie yesterday that I managed to snap this rather unusual shot of a shoal of sandeels which were reflected in the top half of the photo by the mirror-calm water surface

An Atlantic Puffin flies in with a delivery of sandeels for the young’uns. It is moving lickety split and will dive directly into its burrow. All part of its strategy to avoid the gulls who would steal its catch. Iceland #birds_matter #birds
