India after independence went in a very different direction. Courageous experiments in nonviolent self-sufficiency do still go on (notably the Sarvodaya movement in Sri Lanka and Auroville in India) but the Gandhian dream of a scaleable model of self-sufficient village life remains elusive. (7/8)

While this carries an eternal truth, this was central to Gandhian thought -- embodied in the idea of sarvodaya (and shramdaan). He tried to frame what seemed like a game-theoretic coordination problem in terms of a moral attractor. While we live in cynical times, the formulation had a clean purpose.
Maybe the most important thing I’ve learned over the past few years is that the solution to what looks like a collective action problem is to just start solving it. People will show up.

JoAnna Macey died recently. What she is rarely remembered for was her radical engaged Budhism and the energy she brought to the Sarvodaya Self-Help Movement

Over nearly 100 years, Joanna Macy's contributions were many. Among them, 5 in particular stand out:
1. Publicizing Sarvodaya Shramadana's work to the West
2. Synthesis of systems theory and Buddhism
3. The Work That Reconnects
4. The Nuclear Guardianship Project
5. Teaching on Buddhism and ecology

This month, Sri Lanka’s Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement and DSG co-hosted the country’s first dialogue on solar geoengineering. A closed-door roundtable created space for early, grounded discussion and began developing a path towards connecting it to the voices and concerns of Sri Lankan communities.

M.K. Gandhi’s Views on Swaraj, Sarvodaya, and Swadeshi
Mahatma Gandhi’s political and philosophical ideas were instrumental in shaping India's freedom movement and its ethical foundations. Among his central concepts were Swaraj (self-rule), Sarvodaya (welfare of all), and Swadeshi (self-sufficiency and indigenous production). These were not isolated ideals but deeply interconnected, forming the moral and strategic framework of his vision for India’s independence and social reconstruction. Gandhi’s interpretation of these ideas was profoundly moral, spiritual, and practical, aimed not merely at political freedom but at the holistic transformation of Indian society.

“Appropriate technology is technology that’s designed to be affordable and sustainable for a specific local context. The idea comes from Gandhi’s philosophy of swadeshi (self-reliance) and sarvodaya (upliftment of all) and was popularized by the economist E.F Schumacher’s book Small Is Beautiful.”
