The Cat's Paw Nebula is located among the dense star fields of the southern constellation Scorpius. Being about 5,000 light years distant, in the direction towards our galaxy's crowded central region, it appears visibly reddened by large amounts of interstellar dust that lie between us and the glowing cloud. This gives it a much warmer deep red hue than most other emission nebulae. Some other nebulae which are similarly obscured are the gigantic NGC 3603 in Carina, as well as NGC 6357 (The Lobster Nebula), also in Scorpius. The Cat's Paw Nebula contains up to 200,000 solar masses of material and is currently undergoing a starburst; producing new stars at a very high rate. These newborn stars are the ones that light up the nebula and cause it to glow with the prominent red colour of hydrogen emission. The starburst activity will likely not last more than a few million years, after which a number of large star clusters will have emerged and replaced the once glowing gas. The nebula was first noticed by John Herschel in 1837 and its name refers to the distinct likeness with a giant feline paw print, particularly when viewed in wide field images. It is some 50 light years wide and covers an area in our sky equal to that of the full Moon. The Pinwheel Galaxy (also known as Messier 101, M101 or NGC 5457) is a face-on, counterclockwise intermediate spiral galaxy located 21 million light-years (6.4 megaparsecs)[5] from Earth in the constellation Ursa Major. It was discovered by Pierre Méchain in 1781[a] and was communicated that year to Charles Messier, who verified its position for inclusion in the Messier Catalogue as one of its final entries. On February 28, 2006, NASA and the European Space Agency released a very detailed image of the Pinwheel Galaxy, which was the largest and most detailed image of a galaxy by Hubble Space Telescope at the time.[10] The image was composed of 51 individual exposures, plus some extra ground-based photos.

Comet 220P/McNaught on June 8, about a week after its major outburst. Despite fading to around mag. 11, it still showed a broad green coma, a bright central condensation and a dust tail with a distinct central spine.

At 2:35am EDT tonight, a Falcon 9 rocket upper stage will hit the Moon.

The impact will occur just over the lunar limb, out of sight from Earth, but there's a chance the debris plume will be visible. We should be able to image the crater later. 🔭🧪

The impact point will be at lunar latitude 19.461 N, longitude 266.707 E = 93.293 W. The image shows how it'll look from the earth, with the impact at the blue circle-and-cross symbol. Somewhere close to that place and time, anyway; some parts of the motion of this object aren't entirely predictable. It will be close to the edge ("limb") of the moon as seen from earth, on the sunlit part. The moon will be a little more than half illuminated at the time.
