#Sedilia
An unusual and beautiful arrangement, of a double piscina with triple, stepped, sedilia 🤩 😍
Holy Trinity Church, Elsworth, Cambridgeshire.

"Mine, all mine I tell you". Sedilia decoration at All Saints Hawton, Notts.

I always used to say that in the whole course of my PhD and after, I never came across a single set of medieval "classic" sedilia in what is now France.

Then last week I found out about the church of Tour-en-Bessin near Bayeux.

The sedilia are LEAST astonishing thing about it tbh. It's CRAZY!

Hawton, Notts, is justly famous for its Easter sepulchre and Sedilia, but let’s not neglect the rather wonderful screen complete with peepholes.

South aisle, south elevation, east #StMaryPortbury #NorthSomerset. Perfect 3-light Perpendicular window above C13 piscina and sedilia. Probably Mouse's favourite photo for a long time #FromInsideOut #JustPlainGlass

Stone carving over sedilia in the Thomas Becket chapel in Holy Trinity Stratford

One of the carvings to the roll moulded label above the chancel #Sedilia. The faces look authentic and add to the supposition that the sedilia and piscina arrangement are C13 #FridaysFacesInStone #StMaryPortbury #NorthSomerset

Restored C13 #Piscina, attached to a #Sedilia. The bowl and credence shelf having been smashed, probably in this case during the English Reformation. Beautifully carved chamfered trefoil with nook shafts and moulded capitals #StMaryPortbury #NorthSomerset #StonemasonryMonday

In St Mary's Church, Stottesdon, the medieval sedilia (stone niches where the clergy could sit during mass) are decorated with faces. The carving below is thought to depict the Devil.

Very Victorian sedilia-a-like. You can just tell can't you?

The double chamfered pointed arches of the aisles with their freestone relieving arches are truly beautiful. Left, framing the top of C13 #Sedilia and #Piscina with early C15 3-light window above

Did you know William Blake was apprenticed to the Society’s engraver James Basire from 4 August 1772 for seven years?

He was sent out to old buildings and monuments to make drawings; in particular Westminster Abbey.

At last the wonderous windows of #StMaryPortbury #NorthSomerset, in chronological order (approximately), part C: south east of chancel. Pointed 3-light window with cusped lancet lights. Decorated period. Geometric tracery. Early C14. Curtailed to fit sedilia hence sandstone cill

Stunning #Sedilia and #ChurchPiscina combo south of the chancel #StMaryPortbury #NorthSomerset. The trefoil heads, shafts and capitals look C13 (probably the age of the chancel), but curiously it sits under a seemingly curtailed Decorated-period window. Robbed from elsewhere perhaps?

Piscina and sedilia under the curtailed chancel window. Now there's an architectural puzzler for you...

Then, there’s the shallow single sedilia with its painted curtaining. This is a splendid example of 'trompe l'oeil’.

Finally some of Mouse's #FridaysBitsAndPieces from #StPeterHuntspill #Somerset. Some of the bits and pieces Mouse forgot to share this week: Sedilia. No fancy ogee canopies here to mimic the saints, just a place to park your priestly posterior

🕯️It’s not exactly #touchpews, but I was in my usual place on the sedilia this morning at church.

De Gower commissioned the stunning triple-arched sedilia, with its intricately carved canopy, decorated with ball-flowers, crockets and acanthus.

The sedilia at Holycross Abbey in County Tipperary is widely regarded as the finest piece of 15th-century medieval church furniture in Ireland. Located in the chancel, this elaborate, 17-foot-high blue Tipperary limestone structure was used as seating for the officiating clergy.

The most interesting part of the decorative scheme is 'trompe l'oeil' curtain on the sedilia (the priest seat) and the orange trees, which is a biblical reference to purity and generosity.

In addition to routine maintenance, the task of caring for these historic churches relies upon local volunteers who generously give their time to help clean, monitor, and open the churches.

The sedilia at St Mary’s, Piddlehinton. Prettily carved 15th-century stone triple-seat in the chancel, used by clergy during Mass. Trefoiled arches and a moulded cornice, typiche of late medieval Perpendicular style.
A very cosy squeeze 😬
