Ideas from my Sunday #SermonSky that were repeated back to me were something along the lines of, "We must not allow the intentional chaos and turmoil to live rent-free in our souls." and "During these days we must remember to whom we belong."

Words to myself as much as for others.

Back in the pulpit today. Spending this final Sunday of #Advent with the good folks at First Presbyterian Church of Hayward, where we'll talk about blessing, peace, and how to deal with the dumpster fire of the world around usn with love, hope, joy and peace. No pressure :-) #sermonsky

Oh, the sermons that come when you’re sitting in the dentist chair.

I’ve been preaching from the lectionary this Advent. Today I talked about Mary, who was not meek and mild, but courageous, and tough, and faithful. Had a visitor come up afterwards and tell me she had never heard such positive focus on Mary from the pulpit.

Robert Harris, a #Puritan and Westminster divine, complains that we’re impressively generous to ourselves and astonishingly tight-fisted toward God and neighbour. He says this should shame us into repentance. If that sermon feels unnecessary today… well, that might be the problem.

Augustine: what have I received, what do I owe? Received bread; will give the Bread of Life. Received shelter; will give a House. Received a visitor in sickness; will give Health. The temporal and eternal are not separate tracks.
