During apartheid, South African armed forces killed 69 civilians in the Sharpeville Massacre. The world was shocked. This event is still taught in history classes.

On average, Israel has massacred more than 70 Palestinian civilians *every day* for the past 18 months.

a particularly Bluesky-flavored obnoxious reply is when you note a good thing a bad entity did (eg the 1992 apartheid referendum) and people are like "oh so you think apartheid was good? you support everything they ever did?? you want to hug and kiss the Sharpeville massacre???"

That these people think a Sharpeville Massacre in an American city would be politically advantageous for them puts them in a bubble liberal elites can only aspire to

Heute ist Internationaler Tag gegen Rassismus. Schon mal hinterfragt, wieso?

Am 21.3.1960 demonstrierten Tausende friedlich gegen das Apartheidsystem in Sharpeville. 69 Menschen wurden von der Polizei erschossen, Hunderte verletzt. 6 Jahre später rief die UN den Tag aus.

Just read The Mandela Brief, about Kentridge, who also served as a lawyer for the Treason Trialists, Bram Fischer, anti-apartheid clergyman Gonville ffrench-Beytagh, and at the inquiry into the Sharpeville massacre.

Now reading Biko's I Write What I Like. Biko would be 78 now if not murdered.
The great S African lawyer Sir Sydney Kentridge is 103 today. In a Pretoria court in 1977 I watched in awe as he crucified the secret police who had murdered the Black Consciousness leader Steve Biko - arguably the start of apartheid’s downfall. A very happy birthday, dear Sydney!

"Israeli apartheid has always had a sharper genocidal edge, of which Gaza today is the ultimate expression. South African apartheid was notorious for the Sharpeville massacre in 1960, in which 69 were killed; in Gaza, Israel has committed a Sharpeville almost every day for over a year." pg 420

Ian Berry was a British photojournalist with Magnum Photo when he was working for DRUM Magazine.

He was sent to the Sharpeville Police Station to cover a protest on his day off.

He didn’t know that he would be witness to police shooting the innocent.

In other words, a Sharpeville Massacre every day for nearly 18 months.

The apartheid regime was one of the most brutal states of its time. And yet Israel dwarfs it in terms of the sheer scale and barbarism of its violence.

This should have been the Sharpeville moment of the Palestinian rights struggle
Throwback to the Great March of Return in 2018, a peaceful protest marking the 70th anniversary of the Nakba. Gaza residents marched, unarmed, toward the perimeter fence, and were shot, predominantly in the ankles, by IDF sniper fire. Victims included disabled people, medics and doctors.
