it genuinely makes my blood boil how all these fuckers in the senate talk about the founders, the framers—they laud themselves as their rightful heirs. but when they're asked to put their political careers or their lives at risk to defend the constitution, they just surrender without a peep

It's not the only reason to oppose the language of takers and shirkers and all that, but people have been warning with good reason: when you establish the existence of a subclass of despised, worthless people it's acceptable to hate and abuse, everyone ends up in there eventually.
The “Labour” Party finds itself arguing ordinary workers, carers and others are “takers”.

Its not that Labour politicians don't understand the benefits they're cutting. They do. When they imply or claim that PIP is an out of work benefit its not a mistake but part of a wider govt strategy to paint disabled people as shirkers & scroungers separate to, & stealing money from, working people

I love that passage, because so many Economists simply refuse to believe that *Adam Smith* didn't think that hard work & getting on in the world wouldn't make you happier.
(Also, that when George Osborne talked of "strivers" vs "shirkers" it's good to remember Smith's sympathy for the shirkers.)
